My great great grandfather was on the same wagon train as Brigham Young. He continued on to San Fran and then north to Vancouver Island which was not much more than a leper colony back then....but he painted the mormon temple mural on the ceiling. He's in a movie as himself, but played by an actor, but I forget which movie.

If I was there? And everyone was "FREEZING" to Death? I think I would suggest to not leave blankets behind, covering the dead. Possibly more would have completed the trip? Just a thought. And, the dry brush that they covered the dead with? Such dry-twig "kindling" has almost no weight.

It could have been stacked in the wagon, and been used to start "fires", without being a burden to "haul". Just another thought.

I am a descendant of the lady Elizabeth Panting (the woman who barely escaped her husband on the train because her alcoholic husband didn't recognize her). Her full name is Elizabeth Crook Panting Wilkes Cranny (long name, due to her having three husbands over the course of her long life). I am descended from her marriage to Charles Wilkes, her second husband.

Clearly showing struggle for all travelers, this is one amazing film, with flashes throughout, showing what happened to people who had already suffered and died.The film shows just HOW tough and nearly impossible it was for all of them, and for those who did not lose their lives, to have traveled so far for so long, and on foot for the sake of having a good place to call home that would lead to better futures. For those who made it and with truly amazing miracles happening along the way, for them we should learn to appreciate just how and why WE came to be and be grateful for their sacrifices and their beliefs, for here we are, because of them and their strongest-of-all Christian beliefs. (My family has old tintype photos, some in cardboard albums, some in hardcover and velvet, that tell similar stories of how we came to be and we surely saw reality as our family's stories unfolded with each page turn.) This movie can easily be watched over and over and each time you can learn even more.. T.C.Christensen created a gem with "17 Miracles"
