A true independent, Alan Kulwicki went from am underfunded, college-educated "Northerner" from Wisconsin, to a NASCAR champion with only a fraction of the budget of his competitors. Four months later, he was gone.

Today marks the 25th anniversary passing of 1992 Winston Cup champion Alan Kulwicki, who was killed in a plane crash on the way to Bristol Motor Speedway on April 1, 1993. Although his career was short lived, he put his name in the NASCAR history books by winning the championship as an owner/driver, the last to do it being Richard Petty in 1979, and later Tony Stewart would accomplish that feat in 2011.

It may have been 25 years, but we'll never forget AK and the dream he had that led him to the Winston Cup championship in only 8 years of Winston Cup competition. RIP Alan (12/14/1954-4/1/1993). We follow all 5 of Kulwicki's victories, beginning at Phoenix in 1988 to Pocono in 1992, his championship winning race at Atlanta, his Winston Cup speech during the 1992 Winston Cup Awards Banquet in New York City, and the ESPN tribute that they put together for Kulwicki.

Also, I do know the tribute at the end was supposed to be "My Way" by Frank Sinatra, but I didn't want to catch copyright issues. I will never forget that cold April morning waking up to the radio news of Alan's death. I was shocked and like I lost a brother. Will also remember that 1992 Hooters 500 race, still the most exciting race in NASCAR history. The King's last race, Gordon's first Winston Cup race, Davy's crash, and Alan and Bill Elliott racing bumper to bumper, door to door for that extra lead lap... WOW what a race!!! And Alan even won with a broken transmission. His crew had to push him out of the pits all day long. I was sure proud of Alan and that "Underbird"... RIP always Alan!!!

After Alan Kulwicki died, Hooters controversially pulled their sponsorship from the Kulwicki Racing team. As a result, the sponsor received heavy criticism for the decision. In this clip aired on August 8, 1993, CEO of Hooters Bob Brooks explains the decision was a result of the loss he felt from the death of Kulwicki and his son Mark, who was also in the plane crash. There was also a stipulation that the sponsorship would remain if Loy Allen was put in the car.
