Route 66 Documentary - Iconography of the American Highway U.S. Route 66 (US 66 or Route 66), also known as the Will Rogers Highway and colloquially known as the Main Street of America or the Mother Road, was one of the original highways within the U.S. Highway System. Route 66 was established on November 11, 1926, with road signs erected the following year.

The highway, which became one of the most famous roads in America, originally ran from Chicago, Illinois, through Missouri, Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas, New Mexico, and Arizona before ending at Santa Monica, California, covering a total of 2,448 miles (3,940 km).

It was recognized in popular culture by both the hit song "(Get Your Kicks on) Route 66" and the Route 66 television show in the 1960s. Route 66 served as a major path for those who migrated west, especially during the Dust Bowl of the 1930s, and it supported the economies of the communities through which the road passed.

The ruins and the road...and the museum

The desert is full of mystery... and history! Abandoned buildings and old highways, plus some radical Route 66 museums! The only way out is through it, so its time for another Randomland Adventure!

Today: Route 66 through Victorville, Helendale, the Bottle Tree Ranch, Barstow, Dagget, Newberry Springs, the Bagdad Cafe, Ludlow, Goffs, and Needles California!

This film lets provides a "vintage" look at Route 66. It was shot in the early 1980's, before the old highway was decommissioned, long before the "Route 66 nostalgia" of today. Take a look back at the Route 66 of 30 years ago. Then get in your car or hop on your motorcycle and go get YOUR kicks!

How to plan a Route 66 Road Trip

My suggestions of what to use to plan a route 66 road trip. My husband and I are planning on travelling Route 66 from Chicago to Santa Monica over a two week period while camping in a truck tent and then travelling home to make a total of 21 days of camping and driving.

LA to Chicago driving Route 66 (and a few detours)

not a quick movie....good movie...
