I read a lot of the articles again.....even though I started putting them together at least 5 years ago.

And yes, I was at the museum in St Augustine many years ago while both the James Dean car and the Marilyn Monroe car were there, but having little money at the time and no camera, it was not intended that I buy a ticket and go inside.......I figured I could always go back later when circumstances changed.....another lost opportunity
that will not be there again.

The new owners of the museum probably sent the cars to the crusher, without realizing the significance
of what they really had.

There is a picture hanging in a Denny's restaurant in Lakeland Florida
on whatever that main North-South street is....several blocks to the South of I-4.

In the hallway leading to the restrooms....
It has a picture of James Dean's car, outside Norma Jean's Restaurant.
and if you look closely at the gas pumps......gallons/prices.........they have the date that
Jame Dean died.

One day Denny's will change the decor, repaint the place, and not being car people,
they will toss that painting into the trash.

So in a strange way it isn’t surprising that the four-speed transaxle from James Dean’s 1955 Porsche 550 Spyder—the car he was driving when he was killed on September 30, 1955—sold for a stunning $387,000 on Bring a Trailer last weekend (including fees).

The wrecked car was stripped for parts after Dean’s tragic accident. Some components went to other racers, while the mangled shell was bought by George Barris, and sent on a morbid road safety tour before apparently disappearing for good in 1960.

Possibly sold by Barris for a quick buck to a museum in St Augustine. The road tour was ending.
No more money to be made once the contract was over. It was easier and cheaper to ditch the car, make a few bucks and drive back to California without it. "Don't know what happened to the car. When the truck arrived back in California, we looked out the window and the car just wasn't there."

Courtesy Bring a Trailer/SwiftmotoringPorsche broker Don Ahearn acquired the transaxle in March 2020 from Jack Styles, who stored it in a crate for 30 years. It is now fitted to a steel display stand with axles, axle tubes, drum brake assemblies, and a starter. The sale includes a copy of a letter from Porsche verifying its origin, along with a documentation file. The transaxle features a split magnesium case designed to house four forward gears and reverse as well as a differential. The display also features a hydraulic clutch release lever, swing-axle tubes, aluminum drum brake assemblies, and a starter motor.

With production of the film nearing completion, Dean made plans to replace his Speedster with a new 550 Spyder in order to further his efforts in SCCA racing. He purchased chassis no. 550-0055 from Competition Motors in Hollywood on September 21 and had the number 130 and the nickname “Little Bastard” applied to the body.

Fellow actor Alec Guinness saw the car in Los Angeles and immediately had an ominous feeling about it. He later wrote, “The sports car looked sinister to me … exhausted, hungry, feeling a little ill-tempered in spite of Dean’s kindness. I heard myself saying in a voice I could hardly recognize as my own, ‘Please never get in it … if you get in that car you will be found dead in it by this time next week.’”

Courtesy Bring a Trailer/SwiftmotoringDean, on his way to a race in Salinas, California, was killed instantly when he collided with a 1950 Ford Custom. He was 24. Miraculously, mechanic Rolf Wütherich, a passenger in the car, survived the crash but suffered serious injuries.

Unpublished photos from the Porsche crash were sold at auction in 2019, providing further proof of the public’s insatiable fascination with anything and everything related to Dean and his death.

Share There’s a fine line between historical curiosity and morbid fascination, particularly when it comes to a Hollywood legend like James Dean. But when 30 unpublished photos documenting Dean’s fatal crash make their way to public auction six decades after his death, it’s definitely newsworthy.

Dean, the 24-year-old actor and racer who starred in 1955’s Rebel Without a Cause and East of Eden, was killed on September 30, 1955, when his 1955 Porsche 550 Spyder collided with a 1950 Ford Custom driven by Donald Turnupseed near Cholame, California. Dean was driving the Porsche to Salinas for the upcoming Salinas Road Race, scheduled October 2, and he was accompanied by his mechanic, Rolf Wütherich, who survived the crash but suffered serious injuries.

A famous color photograph shows Dean and the car—nicknamed “Little Bastard”—at a fuel stop on that fateful day, and a few black-and-white crash-scene photos were published in newspapers and magazines at the time. But a cache of more than two dozen photographs that were used in court proceedings is expected to bring $20,000 or more at RR Auction’s Pop Culture online sale August 8–15.


RR AuctionThe photos come from Robert A. Coyle, the son of Robert Everett Coyle, who served as the attorney on behalf of Donald Turnupseed and his insurance company.

The original black-and-white photos measure 8.25 x 10 inches and vividly document the crash site. There are 12 overhead views of the junction of Route 46 and Route 41, where the crash took place, and 18 ground-level photos, half of which show the damaged Porsche, wearing Dean’s #130, in close-up detail. Photos of Turnupseed’s Ford Custom are also included.

On 26 of the photos, the reverse side is stamp-dated “Russ Schober Photo” or “Stevens Studios.” “Wutherich vs. Turnupseed-Dean-Coulter” is written in pencil on the reverse of all ground-level photos, referring to Wütherich’s attempt to sue the insurance companies of both Dean and Turnupseed. However, Wütherich returned to West Germany in 1957, and the legal proceedings never came to fruition.


RR AuctionTurnupseed, by the way, escaped the horrific crash with only a bloody nose and scratches.

The photos are accompanied by a signed letter of provenance from Robert A. Coyle. The letter, in part, says: “Official photos taken at the scene after the crash and published by Stevens Studios in Paso Robles, CA… used in court case Wutherich vs. Turnupseed, Dean, Coulter… Our father, Robert E. Coyle, was the attorney for Donald Turnupseed… When the case was dropped, he was still in possession of the photographs, and being a history buff, made sure they were not destroyed.”

The remains of Dean’s Porsche were transported around the country as part of a driver’s education campaign. The 550 disappeared during one of those tours and was never seen again.

Perhaps the 30 photos up for auction will help satisfy the public’s insatiable fascination with Dean and the circumstances surrounding his death. Hey, we know you looked. So did we.
