Constructed in 1987 by custom car designer Richard Fletcher, this iconic six-wheeled machine was designed to be a retro-futuristic concept, envisioning what Studebaker stylists of the 1950s might have dreamed up. It is a fusion of mid-20th-century aesthetics, incorporating parts from a 1950 Studebaker sedan and a 1960 Cadillac, along with a powerful 500ci Cadillac engine. The Ice Princess has since gained a cult following among custom car and classic vehicle enthusiasts for its unique history and space-age design.

From 1950 Studebaker to futuristic custom

The Ice Princess XF58 began its life in the 1980s, where Fletcher used a 1950 Studebaker sedan as the base for his radical design. He hand-formed the bodywork by blending Studebaker sheet metal with that of a 1960 Cadillac, resulting in a 20-foot-long, spaceship-like ride. The car’s aesthetic is heavily influenced by the 1950s jet age, featuring a double bubble canopy reminiscent of the Lincoln Futura and a twin-cockpit design like that of an F4 Phantom jet.and a twin-cockpit design like that of an F4 Phantom jet.

Unique features of the Ice Princess XF58

Fletcher’s creation is defined by a series of unconventional design choices. The most notable is the six-wheeled layout, with four wheels in the front for a distinct profile. Other striking details include tapered headlights, Imperial fins, and “nozzle reactors” on the back designed in the style of an early 1960s Cadillac. Powering this elaborate custom is a robust 500ci Cadillac engine, which was sourced from a later model. The interior is equally captivating, with a “Jet Age” theme and golden hues throughout.

The car’s history and evolution

Before becoming known as the Ice Princess, the car underwent a transformation. In its first iteration during the late 1980s, it was originally dubbed the “Vampire-Mobile” and toured Europe. The car was restyled and renamed the “Ice Princess” in 2005. In 2018, it was sold at a Russo & Steele auction for $38,500. The Ice Princess XF58 has since been showcased at various events, including the Chicago Auto Show, as part of the prominent Klairmont Kollection.

A tribute to a visionary automaker

Although the Ice Princess XF58 is not a factory-built vehicle, it serves as a creative tribute to the spirit of innovation that defined the real Studebaker company in the 1950s. The original 1950 Studebaker lineup featured daring designs for its time, including the iconic “bullet-nosed” Champion and Commander models. With its whimsical and over-the-top design, the Ice Princess XF58 captures the “what if” imagination of the era and stands as a testament to the custom car world’s ability to reinterpret and celebrate automotive history.

The 1950 Studebaker Ice Princess XF58 will be offered at Mecum Auctions’ Larry’s Legacy Auction on Saturday, September 20th, 2025, at the Klairmont Kollections Automotive Museum in Chicago, Illinois. The car will be offered without reserve and is being sold from the Larry Klairmont Museum Collection along with other unique custom cars such as the award-winning 1955 Ford Beatnik Bubbletop Custom, the Golden Sahara II, a legendary custom car with glowing tires, and a George Barris protege build, the 1956 Continental Mark II Custom Bubble Top.

The 1955 Ford Beatnik Bubbletop Custom is a breathtaking feat of automotive artistry, a one-of-a-kind, retrofuturistic show car built decades after the original vehicle rolled off the assembly line. Masterfully crafted by customizer Gary “Chopit” Fioto, this rolling sculpture stands as a tribute to the golden age of custom car design, borrowing inspiration from iconic builders and the space-age optimism of the 1950s and 1960s. More than a mere restoration, the Beatnik represents a full-scale reimagining of a custom bubbletop, blending a modified modern chassis with a stunning hand-formed body.

A Fusion of Classic American Iron

While the project started with a 1955 Ford, very little of the original vehicle remains, aside from a few key components. Fioto’s vision involved extensive modifications and the seamless integration of parts from several different classic American marques. The exterior features a distinct lavender paint job with hand-formed steel and aluminum bodywork, meticulously welded to create a cohesive, flowing design. The front is dominated by a customized bumper from a 1959 Cadillac, while the rear features a bumper from a 1958 Cadillac. The fins and taillights are sourced from a 1960 Chrysler, and the canted quad headlights nod to late-1950s Lincolns. The result is a spectacular blending of iconic automotive styling cues into a singularly unique and radical aesthetic.

The Largest Bubbletop Custom Ever Built

The car’s most defining and unforgettable feature is its enormous, custom-molded Lexan bubbletop. Inspired by the futuristic concept cars of the jet age, this transparent canopy is reportedly the largest ever created for an automobile. Unlike most customs where the roof is chopped and lowered, Fioto raised the roofline to accommodate the immense dome, creating a remarkable, spaceship-like profile. The interior is a work of art in its own right, upholstered in pearl white Naugahyde with a rolled and pleated design. Occupants are treated to a futuristic experience with a yoke-style steering wheel and a Chrysler Astradome instrument cluster. A tubular center console and four custom bucket seats complete the audacious interior.

Modern Foundation with Classic Power

Underneath its exquisite body, the Beatnik incorporates modern engineering for reliability and drivability. The custom body sits on a modified chassis from a 1988 Lincoln Town Car, providing a solid foundation for the ambitious project. Power is supplied by a high-performance Chevrolet 350 cubic-inch V8 engine, topped with six carburetors. The powerplant is dressed with period-appropriate chrome and polished components, including finned Moon valve covers and stainless-steel braided hoses. The award-winning 1955 Ford Beatnik Bubbletop Custom is going to auction this Saturday, September 20th, 2025, as part of Larry’s Legacy at the Klairmont Kollections Automotive Museum in Chicago, IL. It will sell without reserve.

The Ford Beatnik has sold at auction multiple times, including a $396,000 sale hosted by RM Sotheby’s during Monterey 2006, and another sale hosted by RM Sotheby’s in California in 2015 (sold by Barry Weiss) for $165,000.

Big bubble could command quarter mil: Beatnik Bubbletop to cross the block

Other bubbletops have appeared in the years since the Beatnik Bubbletop hit the custom car scene, but none of them quite so radical or quite as large as the conglomeration of Chevrolet, Cadillac, Lincoln, and Chrysler parts that will head to auction next month in – where else – California.

Gary “Chopit” Fioto didn’t start with any of those aforementioned parts when he began work on the Beatnik Bubbletop. Rather, he relieved a 1955 Ford of its roof and its chassis and its drivetrain and pretty much everything but its cowl, doors, and hood. He mounted what was left to a 1988 Lincoln Town Car chassis fitted with airbag suspension and powered the car with a Chevrolet small-block V-8 topped with six carburetors sticking out the hood then began a four-year process of blending various body parts into the shell of the Ford.

Fioto debuted the Beatnik Bubbletop – named after his car club, the Beatniks – in 2005 and made news with it the following year by winning the $20,000 grand prize at Darryl Starbird’s annual rod and custom show. Other awards it has won include Outstanding Custom at the 2006 Grand National Roadster Show, first place in the hand-built custom category at the 2006 Detroit Autorama, and the American Cup at Carl Casper’s rod and custom show in 2006.

The Beatnik Bubbletop came up for auction once before – later in 2006, when RM Auctions sold it at the company’s Monterey event for $396,000 against a pre-auction estimate of $350,000 to $450,000. Fioto’s website indicates that television personality Barry Weiss bought it at that time. Scheduled to cross the block as part of Auctions America’s California sale, the Beatnik Bubbletop this time around carries a pre-auction estimate of $150,000 to $250,000.

• More than a simple vehicle, the Golden Sahara II is a time capsule of 1950s futuristic fantasy. This legendary custom car, a wild reinvention of a wrecked 1953 Lincoln Capri, pushed the boundaries of automotive design and technology. From its transparent roof and gleaming gold trim to its most famous feature—the glowing tires—this car captured the imagination of a generation. After spending nearly 50 years hidden away, its dramatic rediscovery and restoration have brought this visionary custom car back into the spotlight.

  The masterminds behind the masterpiece: Barris and Street

  The story of the Golden Sahara II begins with two visionaries: acclaimed custom car builder George Barris and his client, Jim “Street” Skonzakes. After Barris’s personal 1953 Lincoln was damaged, Street commissioned an ambitious new project, sparing no expense to create a truly outrageous show car. Starting with the original Golden Sahara, the vehicle was later dramatically re-engineered into the even more radical Golden Sahara II in the early 1960s.

  A car of tomorrow: The Golden Sahara II’s groundbreaking features

  The Golden Sahara II was a showcase of technology decades ahead of its time. For 1958, its list of features was nothing short of science fiction:
  
  Illuminated Tires: The most iconic feature was a set of custom-made Neothane synthetic rubber tires by Goodyear. Lit from within by internal bulbs, these translucent tires glowed, a dazzling spectacle that cemented the car’s legend.
  
  Remote Control: The car could be driven remotely using a television-style remote control. This allowed Street to perform tricks for crowds, giving the impression that the car was driving itself.
  
  Aircraft-Style Controls: Inside, the conventional steering wheel was replaced with an aircraft-inspired yoke, and a central lever controlled acceleration and braking.
  
  Early Obstacle Sensors: Short antennas on the front bumper were integrated with an early concept of an automatic braking system, designed to stop the car if it detected an obstacle.
  
  Luxury and Entertainment: The cabin was pure opulence, featuring gold and white upholstery, mink carpeting, a reel-to-reel tape recorder, and a dash-mounted television.

• Goodyear contributed to the restoration by re-creating a set of solid urethane tires equipped with programmable LEDs to replicate the appearance and function of the original illuminated Neothane show tires
• The tires were constructed using a mold in the correct size and pattern provided by vintage tire specialists, Kelsey Tire
• Following the restoration, the car was displayed at the 2019 Geneva International Motor Show, as well as at the Martin Auto Museum and at the Petersen Automotive Museum

THE STORY

A truly iconic custom, The Golden Sahara II carries with it a wild and winding story, dating back to its origins under legendary customizer George Barris and backer Jim Street, its years in the spotlight, its sudden disappearance and years hidden from the public view, and its reemergence and return to glory under the care of the late Larry Klairmont. It's a story that doesn’t need to rely on fables or folklore, as in this case, The Golden Sahara II’s tale is one where the truth is truly stranger than fiction.

As the story goes, George Barris was inspired to construct his most customized creation to date from the remains of his personal 1953 Lincoln Capri following a crash with a hay truck on a foggy drive home from a Sacramento car show. With the backing of Ohio customer James Skonzakes, better known as Jim Street, who agreed to fund the ambitious project, Barris and his team completely overhauled the wrecked car into a spectacular custom.
