John D. Rockefeller sold oil for lamps at 25 cents a gallon at time when it normally cost $5 / gallon. So Standard Oil was not simply a money making enterprise, though it was assuredly that, it was also an enterprise devoted to improvement of the quality of life. And the philanthropic enterprises like colleges, museums, hospitals, medical research centers are an extension of the notion of improvement of the quality of life. As Chernow says in his biography, Rockefeller was not simply ruthless, he was way smarter than his competitors and way better organized than his competitors not only in making money but in giving his money away as well.
