One thing about a director like Mann: when you see one of his works you instantly know who's work it is. The Miami Vice show was a sensation in it's day, from the original theme music by Jan Hammer (done using a Yamaha DX7 plugged into a Tom Sholtz Rockman) to the pastel suits, and some great character actors such as Edward James Olmos as Lt. Castillo; it reeked of 80's cool and helped define that era. L.A. Takedown uses the same themes (cars,suits,big hair), but the mostly feeble dialogue and marginal acting skills of Scott Plank in the lead role as Sgt. Vincent Hanna, do Mann's 80's legacy no justice. In addition it's 1989 and culture had moved on from "Vice" - Seinfeld, Guns and Roses, Rap music, etc. I did like the use of L.A. locations though and the film does become a template for the later release, "Heat". Can you figure out what other famous movie used the same 24 hour L.A. landmark diner?
