that's what you call compressor surge due to a lack of a blow off valve...in the diesel world, it's also known as "turbo bark"

Most diesels DO NOT have a throttle plate which typically allows the system to operate properly without a blow off valve!

Ive heard the turbo bark/explosion/surge/ and last but not least turbo farting

good stuff!
