They can set an auto timer but I think one has to stage (3 lights lit) before it will come into play.

Also the lawn chair thing has been done by the official starter for NHRA (Rick Stewart) in many a prostock race long before the NMRA was around.

there's one thing to do it to try and gain advantage over someone or screw with their routine (i.e. they always go in last, etc) but to let it go for almost 5 minutes is dumb, both on the drivers and the starter.. (i.e. if I were the person sitting in the water box waiting to do my burnout while the drivers ahead of me were doing this I'd be quite pissed).
