automatic is the way to go in that truck.. but do yourself a favor and get the 4.3L. The 2.2 4cyl is nothing but a dissappointment. I had the choice between a 4cyl 5spd or a 4.3 auto and chose the 4cyl for the gas mileage....now I am kicking myself in the ass, mainly because the 4.3 makes it a thousand times easier to swap in an LT1 since a lot of the accessories both motors are interchangeable and you can use the same 4.3 tranny.

just backing up what everyone else has said..

4.3L good, auto good.

very strong motor in which it can take a decent amount of abuse and neglect and still run strong (not that you neglect your motor right?)

plus, if your truck comes with the LB3 heads, you can swap them out for L35s with no trouble. L35s go for about $200ish used. Get a P&P, new valves, and your set.

We had the auto 4.3s at napa when I was in college, they are fucking indestructable..trust me...we tried, we beat the ever loving piss out of those trucks, probably floored and or powerbraked launched from every light...for a 12 hour shift 5 days a week by mustang enthusiasts...and no problems..they are strong runners.

The one I am getting is the 4cyl. Is that a decent 4cyl? Is it strong?

If you plan on doin any highway driving or using the ac I would strongly recommend the 6 cyl...... with the ac on, the 4 cyl feels like it puts down about 80whp, and the tranny seems to have the JDM ITR final drive, that bitch feels like its at 6k at 80 mph.. Highway driving with AC??? Forget about it, you might as well walk.
6CYL!!!!
