Biden Responsible for Single Greatest Disaster in Foreign Policy in a Century

Victor Davis Hanson, the renowned American historian and political commentator, has joined The Daily Signal as a senior contributor. This transcript has been lightly edited.

Joe Biden is on his way out of office and as a farewell to all of us, he reviewed the state of affairs abroad to his own State Department. And he made a series of claims that were, to be frank, complete fabrications. He said that the world was calmer now than it was when he inherited.

He inherited a common world of affairs, calm world affairs where there was no war in the Middle East. There was no war in Ukraine. He took credit, if you can believe it, for saving Ukraine.

But when he entered office, remember what he said? Biden was asked what would you do if Vladimir Putin should go into Ukraine. He said, it depends on whether it’s a major, a major invasion that had a green light effect on Vladimir Putin. So did the August 2021 Biden, first of all, said he was going to put on hold the weaponry and munitions necessary for Ukraine’s deterrence that Donald Trump had approved and he did. Biden complete scram, skedaddled from Afghanistan, which we left $50 billion or so of munitions equipment for America's enemies.

We lost 13 great soldiers. We were completely humiliated. That left a signal to Vladimir Putin, as did this reality that Vladimir Putin prior to the Biden presidency had gone into other countries that has left his borders two out of the prior three administrations during the lame-duck George W. Bush administration when he went into Georgia and Ossetia, and of course, during the vice presidency of Biden himself and Barack Obama during the Obama presidency, but not Donald Trump.
So you’re Vladimir Putin. You hear that he’s put on hold offensive weaponry to Ukraine. He suggested that he won’t react if it’s a minor invasion. You’ve seen what happened in Afghanistan, and you know that you were able to get away with it in a prior tenure in which Joe Biden participated as vice president.

So why would you claim that you had done this? Outstanding achievement and the war is not over. It’s the worst carnage in Europe since the Battle of Stalingrad with 1.7 million dead, wounded, or missing. It’s nothing to brag about. It’s a complete catastrophe and it was a result of deterrence being crushed. Biden also bragged about the Middle East.

He said Iran was, was weak. Yeah, it’s weak because Israel overrode Bisen's orders to them not to retaliate in kind when Iran sent 500 projectiles, drones, missiles, cruise missiles in two different occasions. And the Israelis were told not to reply in kind. The only reason that Iran is weak, is ’cause Israel bucked Joe Biden, and they did retaliate, not the way they wanted to, but enough to destroy the air defenses and humiliate Iran.

Iaraelis were the ones that went into Hezbollah’s territory in Lebanon. Despite, not because of.... Joe Biden, they decapitated the hierarchy of Hezbollah. They were the ones who destroyed 70% of Hamas against, again, the wishes of Joe Biden.

Bisen said that he was tough on China. He said, China wasn’t our rival.

Biden allowed a Chinese spy balloon to traverse the United States. For a week, he did nothing. China has been buying systematically strategic acreage around our military installations with no effect. China has some 20,000 single males who cross the border. For what purpose, we don’t know, except it must be nefarious.

China surely threatens Taiwan. And why? Well, that’s up to conjecture, but given Hunter Biden’s trips to China on Air Force Two during the vice presidency of Joe Biden and the monies that came from Chinese affiliated corporations, you can see that the Chinese at least believe that Biden is compromised, he being Joe Biden, and by extension, the whole Biden family.
So there’s nothing to brag about. And when you look at the military, Biden said that, I’m the first president that, that will leave no Afghanistan for my incoming successor.
Bisen had no war , because Biden lost it.That’s like saying, I lost D-Day, so we pulled out of World War II, and then Harry Truman, if you were going to imagine a conversation with a live [Franklin Delano Roosevelt] FDR, he had no war in World War II, because I lost it.

Yes, Donald Trump didn’t have a war in Afghanistan because Biden lost it and Bisen humiliated us and Biden destroyed deterrence. So, you add it all up. I’m sorry. I’m animated. I could go on, but this was the single greatest disaster in foreign policy in a century. And yet Biden had the audacity to go before the State Department and claim it was a great success. And I don’t know whether we should laugh or cry.

Even Never Trumpers Are Warming Up to The Donald

I’d like to talk a day about an irony. Maybe it’s something that’s a paradox. Have you noticed that there’s certain people who are coming out of the woodwork who are diehard Trump opponents and suddenly they say, sorta, “I like Donald Trump,” or they don’t say it publicly or they don’t write it emphatically?

And here’s what I mean. He went to Davos and I thought, “Wow, they’re going to destroy Don.” I don’t mean destroy him effectively, but they’re going to try to destroy him. And then the questions and answers were amazing. He outlined tax reform, transparency, low interest rates, targeted tariffs, more energy development, more fossil fuels, closed borders. I thought, “Wow, that is going to drive the Davos people crazy.”

And then the questions were, “Are you sure you can send us a liquid, not natural gas? We need it in Europe,” or there were, “This sounds great, but when will it start?” And you start to think, these are capitalists and they want Europe to be turned to its former grandeur. And all of a sudden, this man is saying something that is exactly opposite of the socialism that destroyed their countries and which they bought into. And now they don’t have to do it. And they’re secretly, but more openly even admiring Donald Trump.

Same phenomenon happened when I was on campus, not long on the Stanford campus, a professor whom I know came up to me, and I would say that he is a moderately anti-Trumper, never Trumper maybe, and he whispered, said, “Wow, the end of DEI is actually not that bad, is it?” And what he was saying is, “There’s no more racial quotas and maybe I wanted to be a dean.” I’m saying, I’m extrapolating what he was saying. “Maybe I want to be a dean or maybe I want to get published at University Press and there’s not going to be any racial quotas anymore or discrimination and I’m for that because the DEI is a monstrosity. There won’t be any czar that calls me up and says your syllabus doesn’t have enough DEI material in it, or I’ve looked at your grading pattern and you’re inordinately giving Cs to people of color. No more commissars.”

So even they are, you know, happy that Donald Trump is doing this. And then we get into the FAA [Federal Aviation Administration] and people are really angry at Donald Trump because in this tragedy of the airline accident, Donald Trump actually said things that were quite blunt. He said that DEI was maybe at fault, and we now know that the, and I don’t want to get into a critique yet of the crash, but it seems like the helicopter was too low, and there was culpability, which seems like one of the air traffic controllers was not there. It seems like somebody left early. It seems like there was a mistake on giving directions about the proper elevations.
But we do know this, and Donald Trump brought it up, and that was that the FAA consistently under Joe Biden had racial quotas and they abolish programs and universities that encourage people who had either expertise through the curriculum or prior military experience who would do well on meritocratic exams to try to join the FAA and they were rejected because of their race. That is a fact and in fact, there has been several lawsuits challenging the FAA and the first nomination to the FAA, of course, the candidate that Biden picked didn’t even know the fundamentals of aviation. He came from the Denver airport, but he didn’t have any knowledge of the actual mechanics of how airports worked, it seemed.

My point is that when he did that, everybody in the media thought it was awful. But then people who probably didn’t even vote for him said, “Wait a minute. I want to be safe. I want my daughter to be safe. I want my husband to be safe. You mean there’s people in these control towers that were selected for criteria other than merit?”

And while it might have been illiberal or maybe inconvenient, Donald Trump told the truth. What I’m getting at is this. This country has moved so far to the left on energy, on DEI, on transgenderism, on crime, on the border, that people even who supported it, whether they’re the people in LA that lost their homes, or the people who voted for Adam Schiff—and we saw what he did at the nomination—they want a return.

And this man is the only person, Donald Trump, with the guts and the backbone to not just make a transition, not to the far Right, back to the center or the center traditional Right that secretly, at least for now, they are happy that it’s going on because they feel that they and most Americans will be the beneficiaries, And you know what’s correct? They’re absolutely right.

The Trump Counterrevolution and the Moral Ledger

Despite the media hysteria, President Donald Trump’s counterrevolution remains on course.

Its ultimate fate will probably rest with the state of the economy by the November 2026 midterm elections. But its success also hinges on accomplishing what is right and long overdue—and then making such reforms quietly, compassionately, and methodically.

No country can long endure without sovereignty and security—or with 10 million to 12 million illegal immigrants crossing the border and half a million criminal foreign nationals roaming freely.



The prior administration found that it was easy to destroy the border and welcome the influx. But it is far harder for its successor to restore security, find those who broke the law, and insist on legal-only immigration. Trump is on the right side of all these issues and making substantial progress.

Everyone knew that a $2 trillion budget deficit, a $37 trillion national debt, and a $1.2 trillion trade deficit in goods were ultimately UNsustainable
including the leftist democrats who created the problem.

Dems telling Republicans to F themselves........ that democrat majority allowed them to do what they wanted was not a solution.
Yet all prior politicians of the 21st century winced at the mere thought of reducing debts and deficits, given that it proved much easier just to print and spread around federal money. As long as the Trump administration dutifully cuts the budget, sends its regrets to displaced federal employees, seeks to expand private sector reemployment, and quietly presses ahead, it retains the moral high ground.

The elite universities have long hidden things from the American people that otherwise would have lost them all public support.

They deliberately sought to neuter Supreme Court rulings banning race-based preferences by stealthily continuing their often-segregated policies on campuses, from admissions and hiring to dorms and graduations.

They have taken billions of dollars from autocracies, such as communist China and Qatar. And they have partnered abroad with their foreign illiberal institutions and then disguised their quid pro quo subservience.

These supposedly prestigious universities have previously made no real effort either to stop or even hide their own campus epidemics of antisemitism.

They have spiked their tuition and costs higher than the annual rate of inflation, assured that the tottering $1.7 trillion guaranteed student loan portfolio would always send them guaranteed cash flows.
They have gouged taxpayers by charging exorbitant surcharges on federal grants from 40% to 60%. And they make no effort to offer students intellectual, ideological, or political diversity.

So, even our most prestigious universities seem to have no real moral compass. Accordingly, as long as Trump retains the high ground, the public, too, will demand either reform in higher education or a cessation of federal support to it.

The economy remains strong, but its ultimate health depends on reaching a trade deal with a handful of nations that account for our $1.2 trillion trade deficit in goods: China, the European Union, Canada, Mexico, the Southeast Asian trade bloc, and Taiwan, Japan, and South Korea.

These nations all know that their tariffs are not symmetrical. But our trade partners will not willingly change. They apparently, but wrongly, believe that the U.S. either welcomes its trade deficits, naively thinks they’re irrelevant, or is too wedded to libertarian trade ideology to demand accountability.

So, too, on trade, the Trump administration is in the right.

Its only challenge is to avoid envisioning tariffs as a new, get-rich source of massive revenue. Data does not support the idea of such large tariff incomes.
The American people signed on for symmetry, fairness, and reciprocity in trade, not tariffing those who run deficits with us or seeing high tariffs as a cash cow to fund our out-of-control government.

Enraged Democrats still offer no substantial alternatives to the Trump agenda.

There are no shadow-government Democrat leaders with new policy initiatives. They flee from the Joe Biden record on the border, the prior massive deficits and inflation, the disaster in Afghanistan, two theater-wide wars that broke out on Biden’s watch, and the shameless conspiracy to hide the prior president’s increasing dementia.

Instead, the Left has descended into thinly veiled threats of organized disruption in the streets. It embraces potty-mouth public profanity, profane and unhinged videos, nihilistic filibusters, congressional outbursts, and increasingly dangerous threats to the persons of Elon Musk and Trump.

All that frenzy is not a sign that the Trump counterrevolution is failing. It is good evidence that it is advancing forward, and its ethically bankrupt opposition has no idea how, or whether even, to stop it.

Almost every single day we see someone here illegally like Mohamed Soliman committing an act of terror when he tried to burn Jewish activists. Burn them. Burn Jews.

We saw Kilmar Armando Abrego Garcia, who was an MS-13 member and became a cause celebre when he was deported. He was a spousal abuser. He was a gang member. He was a human trafficker.

I don’t even want to get into the sad, tragic tale of all of these young, beautiful, vibrant women who have been killed by illegal aliens. I don’t want to get into the issue that here in Fresno County about a half of the traffic accidents, the people involved that were culpable have left the scene of the accident.

So, it’s a real problem.

And let’s put in some historical perspective. Former democrat President Joe Biden’s legacy will be very—he has a legacy and it’s gonna be very hard to deal with. For the next 20 years, we’re gonna be dealing with the fact that he and former Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas deliberately, deliberately, intentionally destroyed immigration law as we know it. They opened the border and they let in 12 million people.

Keep in mind some data. The administration—the Trump administration is doing a heroic job to close the border, but that’s not the problem now. They solved that existential problem. The problem is that you have 12 million people here that are completely unaudited. And this is in addition to somewhere between 10 and 20 million that were here already, prior to Biden.

And on a good day, acting Immigration and Customs Enforcement Director Tom Homan and ICE and the Border Patrol can maybe deport, they find, 800. But Joe Biden let in 10 times that number per day. So, they would have to step up their efforts by a magnitude just to get back to where Joe Biden started.

If you let in 12 million people in the space of four years, you’re talking about 3 million a year. You’re talking 250,000 per month. So, you can see it’s 8,000 a day and there’s no way that that seems even feasible, even when the Left tries to obstruct that effort with sanctuary cities and district judges who entertain these lawsuits to stop it.

The other thing to remember is what was really tragic about what Joe Biden did is he privileged illegal aliens over U.S. citizens. Now, what do I mean by that? His Defense Department—it started under other Trump-era defense secretaries—but they drummed out 8,500 of some of our best soldiers because they did not trust the experimental mRNA vaccine. Many of them have had COVID-19 and had natural immunity. Think about that.

At the same time they did that, they were letting about 7,000 to 10,000 people a day come through with no worry about whether they were vaccinated or not.

So, they were telling some of our bravest soldiers: “We’re going to go after you and drum you out of the military if you don’t get this vaccine. But over here, we’re gonna let in 10,000 people, 8,000 people. We don’t know who they are. But they don’t have to have a vaccine.”

Take another example. We were supposed to all get something called the Real ID in 2020. It was delayed because of COVID-19. And it was enacted, I think, on May 7, 2025. But here’s the point. For the last two years, people have had to get ready to get that ID or they can’t fly. They have to have a passport or a birth certificate. They have to have proof of residency in their state, you know, bills or a lease or something. It’s a difficult process. You’ve got to go in person to the DMV.

So, what’s my point?

We were flying people in from Southern Mexico—to take one example—into particular airports in the United States, mostly in the Southwest but not exclusively. And we were doing it in the dead of night. And sometimes when you went to an airport, it would say “immigrants” but they were not checking anybody’s ID.

In other words, a person in Chiapas or Yucatan or Oaxaca or Michoacan could say that they were a refugee, get on an app—you know, hit the app—get on a plane, and fly to an airport at 2 in the morning without passport control. Think of that.

That happened while most Americans, as I speak, cannot get on a flight unless they have a real super ID that has been certified and adjudicated by forms of ID, in addition to your driver’s license.

Again, we are treating people who are breaking the law by coming here and residing here better than we are U.S. citizens.

And the wall is a wonderful thing that’s continuing. President Donald Trump’s efforts to secure the border have been widely successful but the problem right now is an existential one. What do you do with 12 million people when you can only deport 800 or a thousand a day? And you need to deport, if you want to solve the problem and get back to square one on Jan. 20, 2021, you’ve got to increase that by 10.

Final query: Why did Joe Biden do this? Or the people around him? What was the purpose? Was it to expand the DEI agenda? Was it to bring poor people that didn’t speak English, without skills or high school diplomas, so they would grow the entitlement industry? Have to raise taxes? Redistribution? Was it nihilism? He just got angry at Trump people and he thought, “This is one thing they won’t like, we’re just gonna open the borders”? Was it to change the demography so with mail-in and early voting these people could be instant constituents? Or was it just that he was mean? Mean. He was ?nihilist. He just said, “I’m going to blank blank this up.” Or was he incompetent? Good old Joe from Scranton.

I don’t know the answer to that. But I do know that we’re gonna have to find it in the next 20 years because this is the most grievous thing of all the terrible things that happened under the Biden administration. This one will be his legacy and we’re gonna have to live with it.

And you're going to lose readers. You are so wedded to the idea that Donald Trump is going to destroy the United States because of your personal animus, you cannot see that most people have commonsense solutions.”

Nazi is referring to a political party between 1920 and 1945, just 25 years, that, in the ashes of the defeat of World War I and the Great Depression, it played on the fears of Germany and it created something called the National Socialist German Workers’ Party. Nazi, that’s the abbreviation. And its aim was to substitute nationalism and race for class, so they could compete effectively with communist socialists.

So, they didn’t say, “We’re not socialists.” They said, “We are socialists, but we’re national socialists and we are, essentially, a big union of German workers and we believe in the singular racial purity and superiority of the German people. And we’re going to get back what we lost to the Depression and war, war costs that we had to pay for, remittances to the winning side, reparations, etc., and the loss of World War I and the humiliation that that incurred.”

So, in that period, Adolf Hitler became their chief spokesman. He convinced the German people to go to war. They were successful between Sept. 1, 1939, until about 1943, when they literally took on the whole world, especially the United States and the Soviet Union, in addition to Britain and the defeated allies of Western Europe.

They lost, but in the process, 70 million people were killed. And more importantly, in some sense, at least 6 million—I don’t mean more importantly in number of deaths, but in the intent. These were not part of the war dead. They were a systematic effort to destroy European Jewry, the Roma, and some Slavic people, 6 to 7 million of them. That was what Hitler did, and he justified that.
So, ever since, that word “Hitler” or “Nazi” is equated with mass death. And nobody in the United States within the political realm ever praises Hitler or the Nazis in general. Indeed, we fought them and many of our grandparents died fighting them, victoriously so.

So, what are we hearing? Mostly, it’s from the Left, Left, Left. They call everyone Hitler. They’ve called Trump every aspect of Hitler, a Nazi. We hear it all the time. But what’s new now is that there is a small segment on the right that, while not proclaiming to be Nazis, of course, or Hitler, they are referring to World War II in general and specific aspects of Nazism and Hitlerism, not in a negative sense.

Most notoriously, Nick Fuentes has recently said that he had admired Hitler and he admired some of the things the Nazis had done.

There are revisionist historians on the right that have been showcased who think that it was a mistake of the United States to fight Hitler in World War II, that Josef Stalin was the greater peril. But they go beyond that. And to make that revisionist case, which is hard to make, if not impossible, they have to demonize the heroes of the Allied movement, from Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt to Winston Churchill.

So, what am I getting at? For the first time in all of our lives, we are seeing people openly, overtly—not very many, but they have a larger audience, it seems, every couple of months—who defend Nazism and the horrors that followed from Adolf Hitler’s career.

And so, it’s very incumbent upon us that we know what the Nazis were, when they rose, what they caused, how we defeated them, and how an American elected president or mainstream political figures, even if we don’t agree with them, are not Nazis, are not Hitler-like. That is a given. That’s what we assume, but we have never in our lives seen anybody speak of Nazis, except maybe the Ku Klux Klan or the American Nazi Party, in favorable terms, or at least non-judgmentally. We are now.

It has to be stopped, condemned, so that this does not become an orthodoxy on the right.
