VIR to host 2019 SCCA Runoffs

Wednesday, 24 January 2018

The Sports Car Club of America has officially announced the 2019 SCCA National Championship Runoffs will be held October 8-13 at beautiful VIRginia International Raceway (VIR) in Alton, Virginia. This will be the very first time the Runoffs has been held at the sprawling venue located near the border of Virginia and North Carolina.

"We're thrilled to take amateur racing's most prestigious event to one of the most beautiful and challenging racetracks in the country, returning it to the Eastern United States for the first time since 2015," said Eric Prill, SCCA Vice President & COO.
"The VIR visit continues SCCA's current practice of moving the Runoffs to different locations around the country each year. And with the amazing track, facility and backdrop VIR offers, we're sure the Runoffs will be a 'must-attend' for our entire membership and racing fans alike in 2019, and a fantastic way to cap SCCA's 75th anniversary year."

Recognized as one of Car and Driver magazine's top six road courses in the nation, VIR draws thousands of spectators each year for some of the best road racing in the country. Its uphill Esses and sharp elevation changes not only make it a fan and driver favorite, but VIR has also received international acclaim and rave reviews as one of the most exciting road courses in all of motorsports.

Connie Nyholm, VIR's Owner and CEO, noted that the track first opened in 1957 as one of the country's first permanent road racing circuits. Recognizing greatness, the 3.27-mile track – which will be used for the Runoffs – has remained exactly the same since, with the only change being widening some places to offer safer run-off room.

"I can't tell you how excited we are to welcome the best amateur drivers in the U.S. for the 56th edition of the Runoffs," Nyholm said. "SCCA sanctioned the very first race here, and again in March 2000 when Harvey Siegel and I re-opened the resurrected VIR. Having the 2019 Runoffs will be an important part of VIR's history."

The first official event at VIR was an SCCA race that attracted stars like Carroll Shelby, Carl Haas, Bob Holbert, Augie Pabst, Don Yenko, Dr. Dick Thompson and Walt Hansgen. The track became a fixture in SCCA racing and a favorite among racers due to its high-speed straights, challenging turns and dramatic elevation changes. Today, the venue plays host to the Hoosier Racing Tire SCCA Super Tour, IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship and Pirelli World Challenge.

While racing is the heart of VIR, the expansive 1,300-acre property is so much more. America's first true "motorsport resort," it's an entire vacation destination with a number of onsite hotel and lodging options. Within the property's rolling hills and miles of lush forest, guests can enjoy unique amenities such as the exclusive Driver's Club, dining options, spa, karting, skid pad, and even shooting sports. Located near Danville and South Boston, Virginia, the circuit is within 45 minutes of 1,500 hotel rooms and 100 restaurants. Contact VIR at lodge@virnow.com, or call (434) 822-7700 x101 for lodging assistance.

The Runoffs, which caps the Summit Racing Equipment SCCA Road Racing program each year, has evolved into what is now commonly agreed to be the pinnacle of American motorsports. Since 1964, the SCCA has crowned National Champions at the winner-take-all, single race Runoffs format through dozens of separate races over three days. In 2019, there will be three days of qualifying, followed by three days of racing. VIR joins Riverside (1964, 1966, 196, Daytona International Speedway (1965, 1967, 1969, 2015), Road Atlanta (1970-1993), Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course (1994-2005, 2016), Heartland Motorsports Park (2006-200, Road America (2009-2013), Laguna Seca (2014), Indianapolis Motor Speedway (2017) and Sonoma Raceway (201 as Runoffs hosts.

While the SCCA looks forward to the 56th Runoffs at VIR in 2019, racers are currently qualifying for the 2018 Runoffs being held October 16-21 at Sonoma Raceway in Sonoma, California. The traditional 12-turn, 2.52-mile course layout will be used for that event.

[h=2]SCCA preliminary Time Trials Nationals rules unveiled[/h] Thursday, 22 February 2018

SCCA

A committee consisting of Sports Car Club of America members and national staff has been hammering away on preliminary rules for the first Time Trials (TT) Nationals. Recently, the proposed rule set was the hot topic on an edition of Grassroots Motorsports Live!, which can be viewed through Grassroots Motorsports' Facebook page or at the Grassroots Motorsports YouTube channel.

Heyward Wagner, SCCA's Director of Marketing and Experiential Programs, was the guest on GRM Live! and said the rules unveiling began a three-week feedback period where SCCA members and non-members alike can share thoughts and ideas. The rules will be available for review shortly at SCCA.com.
The TT Nationals rules were constructed to outline modifications/preparations that can be made in each of the four TT Nationals car classes. At one end of the spectrum is the "entry level" where simple modifications can be accomplished using tools purchased at nearly any local hardware store. At the other end of the spectrum is the "anything goes" class where creativity is welcomed and practically any car modification is allowed.
"Before writing any of these rules, the Time Trials Board discussed the purpose of the program. While other programs focus on parity, balanced performance and spec competition, it was felt that TT offers an opportunity to focus more on development, progression and performance," Wagner said. "From this, we arrived at the idea that Time Trials is all about a quest for speed. So, the rules are designed to allow for more freedom and creativity than you might find in autocross or road racing. And, while that is important in establishing an identity for TT, it is equally important to create a culture for TT Nationals where participants can first challenge themselves to set a personal best or record, but also create a space for a collective effort to challenge the track."
In 2018, TT Nationals joins the ranks of the SCCA National Championship Runoffs, Tire Rack Solo Nationals, DirtFish SCCA RallyCross National Championship and Unites States RoadRally Challenge. The event, slated to take place Sept. 28-30 at NCM Motorsports Park in Bowling Green, Kentucky, opens with a full day of track lapping sessions for testing and practice or can be used for participants to earn their TT novice license permit.
The second day of TT Nationals will open with 20-minute seeding sessions used to determine run groups and orders, followed by a traditional time attack in the afternoon where drivers get one warm-up lap, then have a single lap to post their best time.
For the final day of TT Nationals, NCM Motorsports Park will be divided into sections for point-to-point runs. Each competitor will have multiple chances to put down their best time on shortened segments of track.
"This year we aim to establish SCCA as the leader in amateur Time Trials competition in the United States," Wagner added. "Additionally, we will look to generate an event format for the TT Nationals that can be adopted in whole or parts by regions for their TT events. We want to help regions see how TT can be a useful tool for drawing automotive enthusiasts to the Club to have fun with cars."
More information about SCCA Time Trials can be found at https://www.scca.com/pages/time-trials.

Track Night takes off

Tuesday, 20 February 2018

MazdaMotorsports.com

SCCA's Track Night in America sees growth and changes for 2018 to make it more accessible; participants in Mazdas are eligible for Mazda Motorsports support programs

SCCA's Track Night in America has seen more than 17,000 participations in its three-year history of hosting weekday evening on-track events. That encompasses more than 300 events at 30 tracks. For 2018, SCCA expects its regions to put on 135-plus events at 32 tracks with between 8,000 and 9,000 on-track participations. That speaks to the success of a program intended to introduce people to track driving in a fun, safe and non-intimidating way.

"The team put in a tremendous effort in 2014 into developing a concept that was an intersection of the principles of summer camp and the environment of motorsports," explains Heyward Wagner, SCCA's Marketing and Experiential Programs Director. "We wanted it to be experience-driven, it needed to be fun, it needed to be something where the participants had the ability to set their own course and have a safe, fun experience, but also one where there was no expectation of what their outcome would be."
That means coaching rather than instruction. It means no pressure to hit an apex, do a perfect lap or move up into a different group. "Initially there were a lot of reservations about how we were instructing people and the perceived lack of instruction. What we're most proud of is how we've been able to use that model of coaching instead of instructing, of teaching etiquette and culture instead of driving and speed techniques and use that to create a safe, fun environment where enthusiasts can have an opportunity to become participants," Wagner adds.

[h=2]Inside SportsCar Magazine’s March 2018 issue[/h] Monday, 26 February 2018

Philip Royle

Motorsport storytellers often concentrate on the winning, but this month, SportsCar magazine, RACER's sister publication and the official member magazine of the Sports Car Club of America, spends time with Fred White and his multi-year journey to the 2017 SCCA National Championship Runoffs. White's is not a budget-busting, podium-bound racing journal; rather, it's a story of everyman. White's dream of racing at the Runoffs, the speed bumps along the way and the triumph of overcoming seemingly insurmountable odds are all told. His voyage is a rollercoaster, and one readers will enjoy.

The March issue of SportsCar also brings readers the story of SCCA Autocross' first spec class, dubbed Solo Spec Coupe. This class has been a longtime in the making – in fact, many thought this would have occurred in the 1990s with the Dodge Neon. But while competitors had to wait to see a spec autocross class come to fruition, the delay was not in vain.
In addition to breaking news and the like, this issue also features a variety of safety stories ranging from ear protection to a first-person account of racing safety from multi-time Runoffs champion Andy McDermid. There are lessons to be learned in every off-track excursion, and SportsCar brings them all to the reader.
Members of the SCCA receive SportsCar magazine each month as a benefit of SCCA membership. The issue is available in both physical paper form and online through the member login at www.scca.com. Join the SCCA now and read the digital version of the March 2018 issue of SportsCar tonight.

[h=2]Hoosier SCCA Super Tour gets rolling at NOLA[/h] Sunday, 04 March 2018

SCCA / Image by Mark Webber

Competition ramped up immediately Saturday afternoon during the Hoosier Racing Tire SCCA Super Tour stop at NOLA Motorsports Park, a race weekend hosted by the SCCA's Southwest Division. In the very first race group, two different classes experienced great battles for victory.

In Super Touring Lite, more than a dozen drivers were led to the green flag by Danny Steyn in his colorful Mazda MX-5. Steyn quickly established a solid gap on the field, but pulled into the pits midway through the race with some sort of issue. Left to battle for victory were Amy Mills, piloting a Mazda Miata, and Mike Taylor in the No. 39 Just Track It/Hong North Racing Honda Civic. Things got intense for Taylor as the duo worked through traffic.
"I went for my brakes and they weren't there. I had a big panic, my elbows all over the place, and Amy managed to get by me," Taylor recalled. "I managed to get by her again and hold her off. So, it was pretty cool."
While Taylor and Mills were doing battle, Touring 2 competitors were also duking it out on the 2.75-mile, 16-turn circuit. Jay Pellegrini, in a Nissan 350Z, had the T2 pole and took the early lead. Bill Collins, who had never before raced at NOLA Motorsports Park, fell behind Pellegrini by nearly 12 seconds. However, Collins' No. 63 Interstate Truck Driving School Chevrolet Corvette came into its own midway through the race, and he closed the gap to Pellegrini. The two fought hard, with the margin of victory finally being less than half a second.
"I got by him once, and he got back by me in some really clean racing," Collins noted after the challenge. "As luck had it, I was able to nip him at the line."
The GT-2 race later in the afternoon also had some intrigue. At the start, Ben Hocevar and his Chevrolet Corvette moved to the front, followed by his father, Alexis, in a Howe Camaro. But Ben pulled into the pits after a handful of laps, and Alexis was passed by Don McMillon in his No. 51 Salasko Racing Chevrolet Corvette. Alexis gave chase but spun, and McMillon thundered away to victory.
"We had a really good race and swapped the lead several times," McMillon said. "I just held on."
There were plenty of great SCCA Club moments Saturday at NOLA Motorsports Park, but a special one came from Danny Steyn. Yes, he had a less-than-optimal Super Touring Lite outing earlier in the day. However, he came back strong later to claim the Spec Miata victory in his No. 39 Adept Studios/Rossini Engines/OPM Autosports/G-LOC Brakes Mazda Miata.
"Exactly a week ago, I turned 60 years old," Steyn pointed out. "I've had this goal for a long time that I wanted to win a U.S. Majors or Hoosier Super Tour Spec Miata race at the age of sixty. And one week into 60, I pulled it off. So, I'm really thrilled I could make this happen."
Saturday came to a close with a meal that included hot wings that made tongues sing, and a fantastic array of desserts. But competition resumes Sunday at NOLA Motorsports Park with racing slated to begin at 10:55 a.m. local time with 35-minute events throughout the day. Follow all the action live at www.scca.com/live.

[h=2]Inside SportsCar Magazine’s April 2018 issue[/h] Friday, 23 March 2018

For certain members of the Sports Car Club of America, the club is about more than the competition. Without these intense enthusiasts, SCCA events would cease to exist. These people not only compete, but they also set up courses, run timing and scoring, handle the needs of registration, or complete one of a million essential tasks.
One such person is SCCA Cal Club Region member Anthony Porta, and SportsCar magazine (SCCA's official member magazine and sister publication to RACER.com) takes a look at what and why Porta does what he does. His story is one of inspiration, as he thrives to improve not only his national championship-level driving, but also the club and the events his region hosts.
The April issue, which is landing in the mailboxes of SCCA members right now, includes a slew of other features including coverage from the 2018 SCCA National Convention, bolt-turning action from SportsCar magazine's latest autocross project car build, and data analysis tips. Also inside, SportsCar's editors chat with four SCCA Solo National Champions, discovering their secrets to speed.
Beyond the features, the issue brings readers details about the newly announced 2019 SCCA National Championship Runoffs, along with Solo contingency payout information and the creation of the Time Trials Nationals, an event set to take place in September of this year.
Members of the SCCA receive SportsCar magazine each month as a benefit of SCCA membership. The issue is available in both physical paper form and online through the member login at www.scca.com. Join the SCCA now and read the digital version of the April 2018 issue of SportsCar tonight.

We maintain a list of all drivers and guests that have attended a CFR SCCA Solo event at Brooksville for the past 12 months. If you have not attended an SCCA Solo event at Brooksville in the past 12 months, you MUST notify us of your name and your guests names to attend no later than midnight Wednesday, (ten days before event). This notification can be handled either via completing registration for the event, or by an email to cfrsolo2@gmail.com with the subject line “Brooksville Gate List” with your name, and the names of all guests that may be attending. Your guest list must be 5 names or less.
If you are not on the list by midnight Wednesday, (ten days before event), by our agreement with Brooksville, you will not be allowed to enter the site! If you have any doubt that you are already on the Brooksville list, either register prior to that time/date, or send us an email stating your desire to be on the list by that time/date.
