The IHRA traveling track crew, in conjunction with the in-house crew at the drag strips the IHRA Drag Racing Series visits, have had a challenging 2016: Strong winds, torrential rains, substantially higher than forecast track temperatures – giving the competitors a fast, consistent and safe track surface every time is imperative.
And one of the tools the IHRA couldn't do without? PJ1.
PJ1 is a chemical company located in Arizona that is likely best known to consumers for introducing the first evolution motorcycle chain lube, PJ1 Chain Lube in 1973.
Today, more than 40 years later, PJ1 is still a forerunner in powersports lubrication, billing itself as the world's largest exclusive line of paints, oils, lubricants, and maintenance products. PJ1 Brands markets products in over 50 countries under the PJ1 label.
After a career at STP, PJ1 was founded by P.J. Harvey, who is the CEO and chairman of PJ1 brands. The company now makes dozens of products targeted at the performance automotive and motorcycle market.
But the regular consumer products aren't what is so important to IHRA track preparation. That would be PJ1 TrackBite, the incredibly sticky substance that track crews spray on the track surface to help the race cars get, and maintain, traction. It was formerly known as VHT.
The resin-based chemical has taught plenty of novices who try to walk on the track to wear lace-up shoes, as PJ1 TrackBite is so sticky that it will make it nearly impossible to cross the track with loafers or other slip-on shoes.
TrackBite has been used on drag strips since 1972. Without it, drag racing would be more dangerous, and a great deal less interesting.
