MARCH
SPRING IS HERE
(almost) April 2003 we embarked on the first long drive in my 1966 Chevy II (purchased in 1985) from Orlando to Pigeon Forge, TN for the Spring Rod Run. So here we are getting ready to cross the Appalachians and 10" of snow just fell. By the time we came out of the clouds, the car was a mess, nerves were frayed and I was frozen.

We arrived at the prepaid hotel only to be told that they didn't know about the car show and cancelled all of the rooms. If we wanted to stay we'd have to pay the new higher price. After a much heated discussion, they saw it my way. Tucking in the Nova for the night, safely close to bushes for protection, only to find a giant scratch on the trunk lid the next morning.

Considering the rough start, the show was great and the Nova performed perfectly. After a very long and hot drive back, we just wanted to get home but I spotted this beautiful field of pink phlox in Serrento (NW of Orlando). I couldn't pass up a good picture. We spent nearly an hour at the old corner convenience store with the camera plugged into an outside outlet charging the battery just to get a few shots.

Just a little extra time, and a little extra effort, I got this great photo that I have used over and over for 17 years. It combines my two passions: cars and flowers. I drive through Serrento quite frequently and have never seen those flowers bloom again.

Just a reminder: Never pass up the opportunity to stop and smell the flowers.

 

MAY
STILL NO CAR SHOWS It's been six weeks since my last car event and I want to confess, my withdrawals have been minimal. I have always lived, worked, and breathed cars but now I don't feel guilty by doing the things that I have been wanting or needing to do outside of the car world.

After cleaning out the garage, I took advantage of the nice weather by pulling weeds, laying bahia grass seed, propagating flowers from friends, and cleaning overgrown palms from my new property. My new hammock even got used for afternoon naps. I've learned how to use a pole saw, chainsaw, and a wood chipper. I've enjoyed the sounds of birds and bathed in the quiet breeze of the countryside right here in central Florida.

I've noticed sidewalks being used that never had anyone on them. People are sitting on their porches enjoying the fresh air. And I've seen people slow down and relax.

Two things that I really and truly miss:
1) The greetings that I receive at the car shows plus the hugs and hand waves by everyone.
2) The social atmosphere with friends that only a restaurant can provide, not to mention the great food that I cannot make at home (even though I try).

Sure, I can drive the cars around but it isn't nearly as enjoyable without the 2 reasons above. That is what I miss most.

AUGUST
A SIZZLING SUMMER MONTH I wish I had better news for the car community. We are in a very peculiar time. Many of the car show hosts and venues are in a "wait and see" pattern, and with good reason. Many have delayed shows until next year or have postponed indefinitely.

Recently I contacted or researched every weekly/monthly recurring show listed in FlaCarShows and made updates accordingly. Some host have not responded, therefore a phone call before venturing out may be in order.

Hopefully soon this will pass and life for car shows will resume. In the meantime, there are shows still happening, please enjoy them responsibly.
