Andretti sees an electric future for GRC

Michael Andretti believes that the current momentum behind electric vehicles in motorsport could extend to Red Bull Global Rallycross in the future.
Andretti Autosport is already campaigning electric race cars in Formula E, where it is preparing to partner with BMW when the German manufacturer enters the championship next season. In GRC, the team has been dominant in recent years with Volkswagen, with Scott Speed currently on course for a third-consecutive championship and teammate Tanner Foust sitting just behind him in the points.
GRC has already announced plans for a standalone all-electric class to run alongside the existing Supercars and GRC Lites classes in 2018, but Andretti told the official Volkswagen site that there would be advantages in expanding battery power to the outright class in the future.
"I think the future [of the GRC] is pretty exciting and I think electric could be a big part of it," he said. "Many of us have come to the conclusion that GRC would be the perfect place to showcase electric vehicles. What you're looking for out of these race cars is a lot of torque, which is what electric gives you, and the races are so short that range isn't a concern.
"So rallycross is actually the perfect place for people to go out and say, 'Wow, those electric cars really perform.' I think it will definitely help people understand the new technology more, and maybe encourage fans to want to go out and buy an electric car."

Tanak pulls away at WRC Germany; Neuville retires

After a faultless drive over Saturday morning's Rallye Deutschland stages, Ott Tanak has pulled ahead of the field and holds a 23-second advantage over Andreas Mikkelsen, the Norwegian dropping time with a couple of small mistakes. The battle between championship contenders Thierry Neuville and Sebastien Ogier came to an abrupt halt after the first stage when Neuville suffered damage to the rear wheel and suspension, gifting third position to the Frenchman.
Today's route is the longest of the rally and takes in nine stages, the majority over the daunting military ranges of Baumholder. Tanak was fastest out of the blocks this morning and gradually extended his lead, aided when Mikkelsen was a bit cautious in the 42 kilometre Panzerplatte stage and then spun and stalled in the following one. In contrast, the Estonian has driven faultlessly, his only problem being a delaminated tire. Mikkelsen won the last of the morning's four stages to claw back a few precious seconds and he remains determined to fight to the finish in his first outing in the C3 WRC on tarmac.
The battle between Neuville and Ogier looked set to continue this morning, the rivals starting the day just 2.4 seconds adrift. However in the shortest stage of the rally, the left rear wheel hub became detached from the suspension arm and while Neuville was able to limp to the end of the stage, he then had to retire with the wheel sticking out at a 45-degree angle. As such, Ogier instantly moved into third, his rival's misfortune potentially giving him the opportunity to move back ahead in the Championship standings. He is still fighting and has closed the gap to Mikkelsen to 6.9 seconds at the mid-leg service.
Elfyn Evans is now fifth; the Welshman got distracted when the co-driver's door kept opening in the Panzerplatte stage and he then spun in the following test and is having to fight hard to stay ahead of Juho Hanninen, the Finn a mere eight-tenths of second behind in the lead Yaris WRC. Craig Breen holds sixth, the Irish driver also suffering with a delaminated tire. He also had two overshoots and will doubtless be relieved to be back at service after a tricky morning. Jari-Matti Latvala has had a disappointing and frustrating morning with a couple of excursions off the road and then no handbrake in the final stage. He is seventh with over two minutes in hand to Hayden Paddon, the Kiwi the highest of the Hyundai crews.
Jan Kopecky continues to head the FIA WRC 2 Championship in his Škoda Fabia R5 but is in a close battle with Eric Camilli, the Frenchman overhauling Pontus Tidemand who lost nearly a minute with a puncture. In the FIA Junior WRC Championship, Nicolas Ciamin lost the lead with a bent rear axle and Julius Tannert now heads the category in front of Nil Solans.

Mikkelson leads tight early battle in Rally Germany

After four Friday morning stages on Rally Germany, and no fewer than four different leaders overall, Andreas Mikkelsen tops the leaderboard for Citroen Racing on the 10th round of the FIA World Rally Championship. Ott Tanak, another of the early pace-setters, is second in the Fiesta WRC with teammate Sebastien Ogier third having recovered from a spin in the day's opener.
The ADAC Rally Germany got underway last night in Saarbrucken with a short and twisty street stage which was won by Jan Kopecky in the smaller Skoda R5 rally car. Losing an event on these super special stages can sometimes be the case and the first victim of the event was the luckless Kris Meeke, the Citroen driver clipping a barrier and breaking the steering. While he was able to rejoin under Rally 2 regulations this morning, a 10-minute penalty has put paid to any hope of a top result in Germany in the C3 WRC that has proven to be so fast on tarmac.
Today, the crews headed from Bostalsee and the morning loop included two runs through a super special stage and two narrow tests in the vineyards littered with hairpins. Mikkelsen, driving the C3 for only the third time, had a far from beneficial lowly road position but in the drier conditions this morning the Norwegian struggled less with mud being dragged on to the road from the drivers ahead and he was able to power ahead of Tanak and take the lead, revelling in the performance of the car on asphalt.
Like everyone, Tanak has found the conditions challenging and despite dropping from the lead after SS3, the Estonian is only 4.1 seconds adrift at the mid-leg service. Ogier didn't have the greatest start, spinning into a field in the first stage, but the reigning FIA World Rally Champion has bounced back from seventh to third and is crucially ahead of championship rival Thierry Neuville, who is down in fifth after also going off into a vineyard in the second stage. Elfyn Evans sandwiches the title contenders in fourth, the Welshman struggling with understeer during the morning stages.
Behind fifth-placed Neuville, Rally Finland victor Esapekka Lappi is sixth in the lead Toyota Yaris WRC. The Finn is far from confident on this surface but is faring well as he gains more experience on pavement. Craig Breen and Juho Hanninen are however hot on his heels in seventh, the rivals both just 2.3 seconds adrift. Hayden Paddon, another driver who is happier on gravel, played a waiting game for rain with his tire choice but it failed to pay off when conditions were drier than expected. He then picked up a puncture in the penultimate stage and dropped more time. Jari-Matti Latvala rounds off the top 10, the Finn higher up the leaderboard until an engine misfire dropped him back; he is now over 90 seconds adrift of the lead.
Dani Sordo, starting his 150th WRC event, was on the pace this morning and led after the opening stage. However the Spaniard then went off the road in the third stage and was forced into a disappointing retirement on an event he had targeted for a win.
The FIA WRC 2 Championship category has a strong field in Germany and tarmac ace Jan Kopecky is topping the field in the Skoda R5. Pontus Tidemand, fighting for an unassailable lead in the championship, is second and only 5.9 seconds adrift in similar machinery. The FIA Junior WRC Championship contenders are also continuing their season-long battle and Rally Finland category winner Nicolas Ciamin is ahead of his rival for the title, Nil Solans.
