Toyota Truck, Need Help!
Hey guys. Got a 96' Tacoma SX 2.4L 4-cyl 2WD. Code is 2RZ I think. I can check in a heartbeat. Here's the problem:
At 82k miles, the SES light came on. TPS Closed Position Failure. Went to Toyota, $92, bam, problem solved. Truck stopped bogging off a stop, ran fine...
For about a week...
Then the SES came on again. Car ran fine so I didn't bother tripping it. About 3 months later (tonight), I finally got sick of it bogging and stalling again from a stop (last 3 days), so I tripped the codes again.
510: TPS Closed Position Failure.
SAME SHIT! How could it have failed a week later? It's on tight, the plug is snug.
Only mods are K&N Air/Oil/Tranny filters (the tranny one was hard to find). Oddly enough, about 1-2 weeks after I installed the K&N air filter, the SES code tripped (when the TPS failed the first time). Oil/Tranny filters have been on for about 20k now (oil & filter changed regularly)
Any idea why I keep frying TPS's? Would the K&N air filter have anything to do with it? Can't imagine so. I ain't spending another $92 unless I know it won't happen again. Help guys, I'm at 89k miles now and this is the first thing that's broken since this truck rolled off the assembly line!
Thanks in advance.

Think that'd cause TPS's to fry? No SES code talking about MAF sensors. Then again, with the new rush of air intake through the K&N, maybe it's confused.

My dad (ASE Cert) suggested cleaning the MAF. He says the oil from a new K&N might've gotten on it. I'll try that today or tomorrow, thanks.
Too bad I already fried another $$$ TPS

You probably don't have a bad TPS, the engine ECU will store a closed throttle voltage value after the engine is started for the first time with cleared memory. If the throttle stop is not adjusted right or the butterfly is not returning to the same position every time the throttle is released the ECU will store a tps code. Check the throttle cable adjustment when the engine is running (due to the butterfly vacuum positioner) and make sure it's not too tight.
