Default seventh generation Celica questions

Don't take this the wrong way all of you Celica people, but are these cars really just miserably slow?
I've driven Honda's with more torque.
My roommate drives a 2003 Celica GT automatic and that thing just has no balls really at all leaving a light. Almost feel like it has a hard time just keeping up with traffic until it gets going. It is a lot better once it gets moving, and the RPMS are getting to 3k and above.
If it is really just that slow, then its just whatever, but if it should have a little more pep, then some pointers as to what could be wrong would be great. My roommate swears it used to be faster and all of that jazz. It rolled 100k a month ago. Is the car really just that worn out? It hasn't had all of the maintenance the way it should have, but I've been doing what I could the past several months to get it caught up with everything. A few sea foam treatments, new spark plugs, new fuel filter, new air intake filter, coolant flush, new tranny fluid.
I know my sense of "how it should drive" is biased because I drive a 5spd everyday and a 5spd feels totally different than an automatic, especially when you first start moving. But at the same time, she is telling me about how she used to be able to just punch the gas and it would chirp the tires a little bit. Now, there isn't a whole lot of difference in acceleration between half throttle and full throttle and the tires are pretty worn out, so it should be all but spinning them, or at least I would think.

thats what I was thinkin... she just swears it was faster... She swears it isn't running right and all that jazz. I mean, I'll give it to her, the idle is a little inconsistent, but i doubt it is an actual issue.

If they are really just that slow, then why do you see so many of them "built up"
The GTS isn't that much faster is it? I thought it was the same motor, but little crap like 4 wheel disc brakes and what not like that... Is there a popular motor swap or something that I just don't know about?
I don't get it. I feel like I've got to be missing something because every single Celica owner I have ever met thinks their car is the tits and they constantly rag on hondas for being slow and ricey and stupid.

no the gts has a 2zz motor the gt has a 1zz, the 2zz can also be found in the matrix and the lotus, the 1zz if found in the corolla. there is about a 60hp difference between the motor on the dyno i've seen as much as 80hp difference. if your have ever driven an rsx type s it feels about the same as the gts celica. the auto gt if about as slow as it gets tho. i own and have built several celica's and i can tell you they are not all slush box's

if she hasnt done her general maintenance that y her shit is slow.... she needs her tune ups- maybe new headers ( which arent that much trust me ), her exhaust system, she needs to change all her fluids- flush out the old shit- i have had 4 celicas- i am not dissapoinbted unless i try to race my husbands supra-lol, but all in all i take care of y car its a 94... runs like a fucking champ- i have 250k miles- i believe that car had probably been dogged out ( thats y they say most females no nothing about cars - cuz they cant fix their shit or keep up on it which results in blown motors, heads, etc... she needs to re-evaluate if she wants to be a real chick or a ricer chick and keep up on her shit or just do the car the favor and sell it.. to someone who will take care of it....

ps average mileage on a car is about 8k - 10k miles per year - if she dont travel- which is about 70k miles, so that car is way over what it should be - my boy had a 04 with almost half the miles and that bitch is quick

it may be a little low on compression, but its pretty much as slow as it should be. the gts is a massive difference. ive seen GTS's with I/H/E and sticky tires break into the 13's

i just think the 7th gen is a sexy car, also a big fan of integras though too. if i was looking for modability though, i'd stay away from the toyota

Toyota's rule.

you couldnt be more wrong. ive owned 2 first gen celicas, 1 third gen celica, 3 mk3 supras, 1 mr2, 1 ls400, 1 toyota pickup, and i'm currently building a widebody S13 with a 600+ whp 1jz.

i actually love toyota enough that ive got the toyota katakana logo tattoed on my forearm. i am a toyota fan through and through. many call themselves toyota tuners, fans, or just swear by the brand. but i love these cars enough to put a permanant mark on a displayed area of my body. i love toyota, classic toyotas, 80's or even new toyotas.

how much i love toyotas is irrelavant in some cases. theres just no way in hell you can make a 7th gen celica fast for the price you can an integra.
