hi tr i got a 88 rolla gts front wheel drive and i had taking off the cam gears and they moved while i was trying to take them off so now i dont know how to set the cam gear timing does anybody know how or have a diagram that could help me set the timing please need help asap cuz my friend said that i have to set it the right way or it migh ffff up my engine.Thanks.
Easier to do than explain. Now there are timing marks on the crankshaft gear and cam gears. You have to make sure all 3 marks are aligned. If its wrong you wont damage your engine. Its non interference but it will run like ass.
On the cam gears you will notice that their are retaining pins that hold them in place with the cam. On the left cam that pin has to be pointed up to match up with the gears timing mark with the timing mark on the upper left side of the cover behind the cams. On the right side the pin has to face downward and the timing mark on the gear(which will be on top of the gear) has to line up with the mark on the upper right side of the timing cover behind the cams. And on the crankshaft gear there will be a little nub extension piece on it that has to be line up with the mark on the block itself. This is all assuming you took everything apart properly and the number 1 cylinder was at TDC of the compression stroke when you did all of your disassembly. IF you just ripped everything apart w.out that 1st step and just ripped it apart randomly you have a lot more work to do and should let someone else finish the job. LIKE ME!
HTH. To be honest though if you didnt know how to get yourself out of this you really shouldnt be messing with timing belts.
