ok
my car is for sale. it has 113500 miles on it. its reasonably priced but is not selling.
if it doesnt sell by mid-august i will be forced to keep it for now because im moving to UCF in orlando and dont talk to me about trade-in because i wont get shit for it even if it was returned to stock.
i have the original 5s-fe engine in there and although strong as ever in its true toyota form its showing its age (100000 miles for a toyota is just broke in and can last up to 400000 miles and beyond but needs more and more maintenances---which are expensive). my question is this if i just decide to keep the car and live with having an automatic transmission and being slow for another year or two should i a)just pick up another 5s-fe engine (which i can probably get for about $500-$1000) or try and fix everything on my car. ive already fixed valve cover gasket and distributor oil seal but hte rear main seal and tranny pan and oil pan gasket are leaking. ive been quote:491fdb54cfd like 450 for the seal and another 100-150 for both gaskets and labor. (i could do those myself if i had the time and a lift etc)
i also have a driver door lock actuator that is gone and i have to get toyota to do that if i decide to fix it (still locks manually-but cant use my keyless with it broke) that will be $400 (damn toyota labor charges).
please someone give me something to think about or any ideas you may have. i will be very disappointed if i cant get this to sell by the time i leave for college. lowering the price twice has gotten more calls but nothing serious yet. ive been wanting to do a 3s-gte mr2 turbo swap (or the bolt on turbo kit) for the longest time now but money is short and its not a drop in situation like h/a cars. mounts have to be modded and the wiring isnt too hard actually. it just hasnt been done that much (only 1 is running in the US that we know of in my generation of camry--a few older camrys have them) and one is in the shop being R&Dd for them to sell the mounts and ecu stuff to make it plug and play. perhaps if i wait by then they will have it but then again probably not.
im torn on what to do. if anyone knows a place that would give me a reasonable trade-in or something let me know.
i am desperate and need to sell.

i say keep that blue beauty dan. the oil pan gasket is a very easy fix that you can do in the driveway and i dont know about that tranny pan problem but if need be pay for that one. but see the thing you will be needing soon is a reliable car which is what you have. so what it doesnt run blistering times it gets you from point a to point b without worries and that is really whats important.
you are going to school which is a good step in life and i am sure with time you will find a major and work in that field which inturn will bring money your way. which means then you will be able to but whatever you want and do whatever to it as well. but we all know that toyota will last through this all and remain to be a good daily driver.
so my opion says stick with the camary for the relibility right now and later on down the road pick up a project car that you can leave parked for a few weeks if need be.

thanx justin! im thinking of keeping it since its been up for sale since beginning of june and well i dont think its going to sell by august 15th which is like 3 days before i go to ucf. i think ill just have to deal with an automatic transmission and a slow 130hp engine for now. im actually thinking of keeping it fixing the oil pan myself doing the rear main seal by paying (you have to pull the tranny off to get to that argghh)
and fix my broken door lock by taking it up the ass from the dealership who is the only one who could do that sort of electrical in the door work.
i can also pick up a used 5s-fe engine with probably around 60-70k miles on it for between 500-800 from a local yard that i know might be able to help me and either rebuild that and put it in for the lower mileage to last the extra few years. i would very much like it keep this car its just pissing me off that i cant be fast AND original with my budget
but i guess ill have to come back in about 3-4 years and run a traction limited 12 second 1/4 mile for you all heheheheh and it can be done cuz it has! a daily driven grocery getting 400+ hp turbo beast!
ill talk to the parents and see whats up maybe they can pitch in some dough for a new auto tranny...my dad says i will be needing one very soon although mine feels fine right now... i been paying half for the maintenance but the door lock is like 400 bucks and the rear main seal is another 400....! doh...time will tell

I had a car alarm place add power locks to my dakota... are you sure that the dealer is the only place that will do it for you?
They only charged me like $60/door actuators included.

see if you can find another motor and tranny that would rock the casbah you could take the time rebuild them both and then swap them in and have yet another reliable set up and then rebuild the one you pull out and sell it or keep it and work the shit out of it.
as for the door lock why not scour the junk yards for one the locking unti itself i am sure you wold be able to find one with ease and if it is the actuator then you can get one of those from any radio shop and with a little bit of time put it in yourself or like clint did pay someone a small amount of money and get it done.

Hey buddy you know my stance on this! I say swap the MR2 motor or bolt on the turbo kit. It would be awesome to see a sleeper Camry blowing peoples doors off! Last thing I would do is swap a 5 speed trany in. But thats just my .02.
How hard/expensive would it be to get a 5spd tranny in there? I would be willing to bet a 5spd tranny would knock .5 off your 1/4 and be a hell of a lot more reliable. You really cant modify that engine or any engine connected to that weak ass auto tranny. Does the MR2 tranny work? I have a 5SFE w/tranny that is equipped with an ACT clutch for sale. (96k miles) Came out of my MR2
A guy I work with offered me $500. The engine needs a little work. Valve guide seals and a distributer seal (again). I feel your pain!! I used to have to go to school in an auto Suzuki Swift GTi. What a peice of shit. I waited a couple years and now Im in an MR2..worth the wait. Good luck man.

mark you always have the stuff i need!!! hell if he offered you 500 i know i could get that. u still have that turbo kit for sale? you had your 5sp in an mr2 though so i dunno how different the tranny is but i think it should be teh same cuz the engine faces the same way and the tranny is just connected to the rear wheels. let me talk to my parents cuz i already told them i was gonna probably keep it for the hell of it. if possible maybe you could help me swap the engines or trannies..(oh btw did u swap in a turbo motor?)
my car last time i ran it with shitty reaction time and crappy launching techniques ran a 17. 5speed would get it into the low 16s easy with my good driving hopefully. and if u got taht turbo kit i will bolt that up. will only be good for around high to mid 15s but would satisfy me for a while whether it was turbo or n/a. the hardest part of the tranny swap is the shifter and linkage cuz i dont know much about them and doing the cylinders and slave cylinder and hooking it up.
my current engine just had the distributor seal replaced it was gushing oil!
i also got a new valve cover gasket and i still have leaking oil pan and rear seal. but would be alot easier to do myself if the engine was out of the car
as far as the door lock actuator goes i have power locks just the actuator went out on the driver door. if someone can help me pick the right one out from radio shack or whatever id be grateful! i looked inside my door and it looks kinda hard to get to but hell i changed both my rear exterior door handles and damn its an unexplainable hell!
chis: i dont have enough money for the whole 3s-gte swap. that would be in the 3k range and if i were to buy marks engine (mr2driver) for like 500-600 or so or whatever he wants (definately around a grand say) and then spend maybe a little money on the other stuff i can get a new engine with a 5speed!!! for 1500 and have money left to get that turbo kit if he still has it. i probalby wont swap in right away as i dunno if i have time before college but i should. i wanna maintenance the one i buy and prep it so i can put that turbo on if i get it. and putting cams and valvetrain components is alot easier out of the car. i quitting my job aug. 3rd to have 2 weeks off til college so if i can get it by then maybe you all can come help me take part in a camry fest!!!
