Default 86 the P/S

Just wondering if anyone has a hook up on a manual ae86 rack set or manual aw11 rack set ("set" refering to including the steering column, U-joints and everything else needed to convert a shitty old pieced out PS system to manual system.) I would preffer the 86 rack, but from what i gathered, the LHD manual rack is rare. I just dont like the look of all the "custom Fab" AW11 brackets ive seen. Ive been looking around but club4ag is down so im a bit lost. . .Maybe someone NOT located in California drives these cars and has some advice

Also, I wouldnt mind getting in contact with other Hachi guys to help me sort through a few issues and just generally BS about the 86, seeing as how im a Nissan guy and I'm beginning to think im in a bit over my head.

Cheers,

Joe

Default converting your power steering to manual

Joe,
I haven't seen your actual steering rack, but You might be
able to CONVERT it to manual. I have done a few with other cars.
Below is text I sent to someone else. If you want me to look at
your P/S, to see if it is convertable to manual, get back to me.-Bob
-----------------
Most people don't understand about power steering.

Over a year ago I removed ALL the power steering parts from my
car. You don't need power steering on a light car. I can steer the car with one finger. Probably lighter than most cars WITH power steering.
(call my bluff, if you don't believe it)

Since I do alignments, I set the front for maximum grip and longer tire wear.............and it still steers with little effort.......not all cars need
the alignment redone, anyway, unless it's out of specifications.

I also make a light weight block-off plate to cover where
the ps was, on the rack.-Bob

One day my power steering belt snapped off in the parking lot. I had driven it for quite a while afterwards without it, because its real easy to turn even without PS. Dont waste your time trying to swap and stuff...just take off your PS pump and drive it like that

Hmm, well, that was my first impression when I heard of the car before i bought it, "light car, naahh doesnt need ps."

Well, The thing is half of the PS system is missing, so there is no fluid transfer back and forth through the lines. There is no fluid in the lines at all. What that does is make the wheel fight against all the (shot, im sure) seals and stoppers in the rack. To be honest, by 94 pickup without PS is much easier to steer, and thats with larger than stock tires. I like steering response and the ability to steer quickly when nessesary. Right now i cant do that.

If anyone has a PS system thats is functional, perhaps off of a manual swaped system, i would love to know. I need the resevior, all lines, and possibly the rack.

Now whats this about the Starlet rack? Will I need the complete steering collomn and custom bushings like for the AW11 swap? I would love to know more.

Thanks for the info guys.

Joe

Well I dunno about yours, but mine in my AE88 was pretty damn easy, no problem to deal with whatsoever, so if you ARE having that problem, I recommend keeping PS

. . .I want to, but ive got half a PS system. So I was looking into the options of going manual, or piecing mine back together, leaning towards manual to lose the parisitac drag. 1.6 and all. . .

I doubt the drag is noticable, and again, if you are having any problems at all on an AE86 with steering, then you want to keep PS, because I weigh a stout 114 lbs and I drove for many monthes forgetting about it because the difference was negligible.

Default Why it's hard to steer with only the P/S belt removed

The reason it is hard to steer a car with ONLY the BELT removed
is: A person is "pushing" fluid back through the system
with every steering wheel movement.

If you drain the fluid from the lines, you lighten the steering
up, since you no longer have the effort needed to push fluid back through the lines.

Remove the hoses, at the rack, and you remove the fluid.
any excess fluid will drip out as you are driving, then plug the holes if
you like, or make a block off plate where the lines connect to the rack.

If you need help removing components/hoses/etc, or need a light weight aluminum blockoff plate made, get back with me.-Bob
