Default tranny problem with 94 lex es300

ok my gramps just got a lex and it worked great for 2 days then the problems started, it wont go over 20 easily he told me. i test drove it and found that it wont shift out of 1st or 2nd unless u let off the gas then it would shift. since then tho once in a while it just will sit there when u give it gas and do NOTHING. it just revs away and sits there. i know the car has some traction control stuff could that have gone bad? let me know if u have any ideas.
thanx

Drain what you can of the ATF fluid. You will probably get out 3 or 4 quarts. If it is burnt smelling or discolored your probably in trouble. Have the entire system flushed if the fluid is bad otherwise just refill with some Royal Purple ATF fluid. How many miles are on it? If you need a new tranny there is one on EBay for $1.00
