1989 Supra project, once again impressed
just wanting to get some facts.
the car was in a little fender bender and the owner sold some parts off of the car. it has the non-turbo 7mge, auto tranny.
is this info accurate for the rear end? even thou said car in non-turbo with automatic? what can this rear end hadle hp wise. this will not be a drag car.
Ring Gear Diameter: 8"
Gear Ratio: 3.727:1
Number of Pinion Gears: 4
Limited Slip: Yes
i want to road corse this car with around 500whp. on a turbo 7mge. (good idea?) what are the limits on this motor and possibilities? i also want to run the original manual tranny? Good tranny or not?
any info given here or links are appriciated.
but as stated, once again i am impressed with Toyota. if above info is accurate. damn thats good. how many so called sports cars have come out with highway gears and open rear ends. the upper control arms on the car are aluminum. 3.73 is a good road corse gear in my opinion and limited slip as factory standard is great. Double wishbone suspention front and back a ++. i will not bs, i do not know much about Toyotas products (exept that its great stuff), like tech info, but i do admit i need some assistance in learning these things.
thanks

MKIII Diff Offerings

All 1G-GTE equipped GA70s have a 4.56, clutch-pack or Torsen LSD differential.
'86.5-'92 MA70 N/A MKIIIs without Sport Package have a 4.30, open differential.
'86.5-'92 MA70 N/A MKIIIs with Sport Package (TEMS & headlight washers on '86.5 - '88 : TEMS & PPS on '89-'92) have a 4.30, clutch-pack LSD differential.
'87 - '88 MA70 turbo MKIIIs have a 3.91 clutch-pack LSD differential.
'89+ MA70 turbo MKIIIs have a 3.73 clutch-pack LSD differential.
'90 - '92 JZA70 Limited and R MKIIIs manual trans cars have a 4.10 Torsen LSD differential and auto trans cars have a 3.91 Torsen LSD differential.
Note that a LSD was an option- so you could get a NA base model w/a LSD
from mkiiitech.com
so how do i know it this car has the "sports package"? i guess i can get the car in the air and spin one tire. if both go in the same dirrection=lsd rear-end, right? or what?

As for the motor, am not sure how well is the 7mge going to hold compared to the turbo model. The 7mgte should handle 500rwhp safely on stock bottom end and head, aside from a metal head gasket and arp studs. Just supply it with enough fuel and a big enough turbo, you shouldnt have trouble making about 500rwhp.
You could go na-t, but keep in mind that 7mgte/transmission and ecu shouldnt cost much.

There are two different 5 speed transmissions, the w58 which came with the 7mge/2jzge engines. The other transmission is the r154 which came with the 7mgte.
The r154 should handle 500rwhp easily, with the approperiate clutch.

ok first off...
the car you have is what? NA auto? if so then those arent your numbers....
if its an NA it has a 4.3 rear end.... you can check to see if its an LSD two ways...simply get under the car and look for the big red sticker that says LSD on the pumpkin OR lift up the rear end and spin the wheels....
most sport packages also had ABS, TEMS, a targa, and a spoiler....so those would be other tips as to whether or not you have a sport package.
