1992 Subaru Legacy Sedan L 2.2L 16 Valve Non-turbo Engine help needed!
Hi guys! I picked up my Subie a few weeks ago, first car and I'm loving it. Except.. Minor mechnical issues that I could use help with. I've never been into cars up until last year, so I'm pretty new to this whole thing. So I was told my timing belt needs to be replaced, fuel filter, my oil's leaking from a valve or two, apparently I have a leak in my exhaust, which I haven't seen yet. It's running REALLY hot, and for the past few days it's cutting out and I have to stop and turn it over. The check engine light comes on randomly, would that be a bad sensor? I've been looking all over for parts but they're so expensive to obtain on my Dominoes and college budget. I'm looking for auto salvage yards, aftermarket/used parts, or from anyone willing to do a little donation if they don't need them. Anywhere in the Pasco/Pinellas/Tampa area would be GREAT. As long as they're in good condition, I'll use them. I just want it back to where I need it to be, so I can start on performance and appearance.
Thank you!
-Jay
P.S: I was also told my motor mounts are bad? And my brakes makes my wheel, and pedals shake but it doesn't pull. I checked the rotors, and they look rusted but then I was told they were fine. I think I was being bullshitted. Any help from fellow Suba-doos on TR would be nice.
Thank you!

God damn you sound like a retard.
Timing belt needs to be replaced: yes do it. You're lucking it's non-interference so you can wait till it just breaks since it's a EJ22E engine. No damage to the head, pistons or valves. Just liability.
Fuel filter is 10$ and easy to replace under hood. Should do it just because of age.
Oil leaks, you need to pull the engine and replace all seals, which is what you should do when you replace the timing belt, as well as tensioners and water pump/thermostat and rigorously inspect the radiator.
How do you know it's running really hot? The car's engine and exhaust are meant to get hot. Just because it's hot to your hand does not mean it's overheating, though if you have any speculative thought that it could be overheating, stop driving it and get it inspected by a professional mechanic that actually cares.
Check engine light, will be because a sensor is not running within programmed parameters and the car's ECU is attempting to alert you. Depending on what sensor has been tripped, it can be detrimental to performance, or could be just emissions related.
Parts are not that expensive new on ebay or amazon, I would try to avoid most retail chains since they do a minimum of 20%+ markup.
The LKQ junkyards in Clearwater off Ulmerton Rd and the St. Pete one of 66th always carry Subarus, especially first generations. I always see 3-5 whenever I pop in.
Motor mounts will be bad by 20yrs, it requires engine removal to replace.
Brakes should also be replaced too if you have no record of them being done. How did you check the rotors? With your eyes? We've already determined you're not an expert in automotive troubleshooting or maintenance and you are willing to put the safety of everyone on the road based on your failed assumption? Brakes are the most critical aspect of a cars safety system and you accepted the answer of "being bullshitted" by someone?
I would not even think of perofrmance or appearance, you have no money as said so yourself on your "college/dominoes" budget, and you're thinking of upgrading your car? You aren't even intelligent enough to make your car run properly as it came from the factory and your main thoughts are performance?

Wow now, I wasn't asking for insults man, but regardless thanks for whatever help you gave me I suppose. Like I said, it's my first car no need to be a dick. No, a friend of mine has a Subaru mechanic in the family so he checked it out for me. I knew the timing belt needs to be changed, I was just putting that out there to see if it would have any other effects on my car. Rotors were tested, and checked by eye from the same person, taking off the wheel, etc. When I say bullshitted, it was my uncle who checked it and said it was fine whom doesn't know much more about cars than I do, and wanted to stray away from helping with any mechanical work.
I have record of the brakes being done, but I believe it was only the brake pads considering they look fairly new. My power light also flashes, and my car jerks for a few seconds until it turns off. What could this be from? Also, don't call me a retard because I'm not car savvy. It takes time, and patience to learn these things, especially on a foreign car like Subaru's. I don't have the time, OR money to get it inspected so I'm doing the best I can to figure out what is wrong with it, and take it as it comes. (Considering Advanced Auto Parts wouldn't do a free diagnostics on my car, like they're supposed to.)
I already bought replacement gaskets, but I can't get to them because the bolts are rusted on with age so that will have to wait a few days until I get rust remover.
Not intelligent enough? Wow buddy, you're really quick on jumping to conclusions and trying to imply something that I'm obviously not. I said performance, and appearance would be AFTER I fix what needs to be done.
