subaru awd system...
leslie, here you go.
ok, the manual wrx's come with a Viscous Coupling Locking Center Differential while the auto wrx's come with Variable Torque Distribution. this means that auto wrx's can be programmed to distribute power differently between the front and rear axles depending on what the driver selects. (this isn't standard...but i know a kid who is working on this...)
the manual wrx's awd system isn't capable of this because its simpler. now i'm not an expert on awd but i've talked to several wrx guys along with the owner of the autotrader (he drives a lancer evo5 and rally races in australia and new zealand) and they were able to explain this to me in limited detail.

#1 chetthewit Leslie knows a reasonable amount about the WRX..
#2 yes.. the Auto WRX has a VTD system.. while the manuakl WRX has a 50/50 torque distriibution
#3 http://forums.i-club.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=226610&highligh t=VTD has lots of information on someone creating a system for controlling this.. so unless the 'kid' you know is this guy.. or has an understanding similar to his.. then he hasnt a chance.
#4 Rally WRX's are able to use a DCCD type center diff.. but its not Variable.. and its not reallt the same as the one on the auto
#5 in my book.. with a decent fron and rear LSD.. teh manual WRXs AWD drive train is far superior in every day competition use to teh VTD as I dont want power being diverted from wheels i am trying to use (but who might be struggling for traction) to wheels that are having no traction issues.. if my front wheels have no traction..and it diverts power to the rear.. thats only going to make the 'understeer' worse in my thinking.. the front wheels wont be able to grab anymore .. but that could be just me.
#6 .. again.. most users use teh maual transmission..i dont suppose that is just co-incedence..
#7 and most importantly.. the internet ows j00..its where i got my information.. and where you too with a search can get yours.

yeah, thats actually the guy i was talking to. he's 21, goofy, can't drive and has an auto wrx and i actually held the broken center differential. if you look at the auto-x results i posted you'll see his name listed below mine as he ran a 48 and i ran a 46. ANDREW HOBGOOD, thats the kid's name.
anyway, he did tell me about i-club and it slipped my mind i guess. after reading what he posted i guess he does know what he's talking about. however, even with the "little black box" that he's designing i doubt it will make him go any faster.
anyway...small world...huh?

yeah.. it is a small world.. the little black box will be cool.. specially if he can make it fully RWD so to speak.. will make dynoing much easier..
the car in my sig is what i plan to build early next year..it has the variable center diff.. its still mechanical though.. can go from 100% RWD to 50/50 ..
i dont think that for competition the VTD syustem is anything special.. for everyday drivign in ice and snow it might be great.. getting traction to where traction is needed.. but i dont think its gonna help on the autoX course.. best thing for that is a change of driver

Besides what Zate said - they are SLOWER, $ for $ invested. Nuff said, more complicated system or not. The drivetrain's weak performance link is the transmission. That's why mine is a manual

Manual is 50/50 distribution all the time. Auto is 50/50 until traction is lost, then distributes 60 to front, 40 to rear.
This is with the GC8 anyways...
