Default Oil changing questions

Im now at 97,000 miles on my 2005 Subaru Wrx. Im trying to figure out what type of Oil should I use due to the high milage on the engine.

Also so has anyone ever tried a BOSCH oil filter?

i use just a k&n filter with every oil change on my 05 wrx with 94k on it. i use shell rotella t full synthetic i believe its 5w40 which is the only full synthetic. you can get it at advance auto or walmart even. its pretty cheap to it costs me around $30 for an oil change. if you check any of the forums the general concencus is that rotella t is the best for our cars.

I use German Castrol (0w30 synthetic) most of the year. In the really hot months (June-Aug/Sept) I switch to Castrol 10w40 synthetic because the car is pretty noisy on startup with the 0 weight stuff in there. I usually go with whatever filter Autozone has on special as long as its not a Fram. Havent had problems with any of them, Bosch included. The OEM filters are good too. My car has 80K on it now and Ive been using this routine for at least 40K of that.

Honestly the brand of oil doesnt matter for the most part, its the weight. Spun bearings are a bit of a problem in EJ205s and the culprit seems to be running thin oil. I would say stick with a 40 weight or at a minimum a heavy 30 weight. M1, Royal Purple, and some other 30 weights have been shown to shear pretty significantly with mileage and by the time you change the oil again you have the equivalent of a 20 weight oil in the pan. Not good.

Valvoline VR1 20-50 race oil with a Purolator PureOne oil filter.... Tupass recommended that for me to use on the old 18G I had, and it works great!

Rp is terrible oil for our cars because of the rating on it. Our cars need I believe cj-4 ratings and rp recently dropped there's down and doesn't reach this rating. Go on nasioc and just search the forums and check out what the best oil is. Most will say shell rotella t 5w40. I used to use rp but this rating thing scared me.
