Bought a non running 95 Subaru Impreza L 4x4 1.8L. I bought the car with the intention of rebuilding the seized up motor to have a DD. Apparently the guy i got it from drove through to deep a puddle...water through the air intake. Right now I have the whole engine apart and soaking in cleaner while i sort out whats salvageable and what needs replaced. Pretty much posting this thread to see who comes outta the wood work with tech advise as well as to see whatcha all think of it. As well as some ideas of what to do with it...besides getting it up and running lol

So my title might was a little misleading from what the first post actually had in it. What i forgot to elaborate on is the fact that this is my first one, although currently not running. I have had american muscle cars,a few trucks and currently in addition to the subaru a civic as well. I look forward to using this car to its max once its running. Ive never had an AWD vehicle or a 5-speed. This i am assuring to myself, will be a fun toy.

 

Great body style. Looks in good shape. Since it is AWD, I'd swap the motor to atleast the 2.5RS motor, or go turbo with an EJ205T. Overall, you will love the handling. That's what caught my attention first.

 

I so look forward to driving it. As for what ive read, any engine on this platform is interchangable?! Im going to keep an eye out and ear to the ground about getting either parts or a whole motor to get this car drivable lol. I know for a fact that i want it to be turboed, i just still have to decide to what caliper this build will lean towards, like higher hp DD or weekend toy to cruise around in. Thanks for the 2.5rs recommendation, any advice or info will greatly help at this point.

 

Dont get an 98-01 RS engine and turbo it...

If you are going that route then just get WRX or older Legacy/Liberty engine. You can land the Legacy/Liberty stuff cheaper it will just require some work usually (rebuild) and wiring harness can be a huge PITA.

 

I am already looking at a big project lol (if i was to rebuild the 1.8l thats in it now). The engine that's in it now is completely seized up. Rust "welded" the pistons in their current positions in the block. Crankshaft it to badly damaged to save. Right now im pricing different alternatives and learning new stuff along the way. Like 1.8 is too weak structurally to add forced induction too...so thats why im thinking engine swap over full rebuild. Liking the EJ20 route. Rebuilding whatever motor i get will be a must for me. Wiring harness will be a new challange for me..ive installed them, just haven't "made" one before. Everywhere ive read people curse that part of their build.

 

i have a perfect working condition 04 wrx short block with 60k on it

 

 

 

I would honestly pull an EJ20 from an 02-05 WRX and the wire harness and drop that in your car. Should be plenty of power.
