Default MAF question

I have friend who's doing a Porsche 914/WRX conversion. The car starts but runs like crap (stumbles, idles rough), UNLESS he unplugs the MAF sensor. Then is smooths out idling about 1200 cold and then down to about 800-900 warm. The ECU is not throwing any codes. Any chance the MAF sensor could be bad?

Thx...Ed aka W9R1

It could be a vacuum / boost / inlet leak. S&R has teh sexay smoke machine for things like this...

I'd say check to see if the MAF is on backwards if not i could be bad. Check the easiest things first.

Also, post pictures. Those conversions are badass!
