2.5 shortblock.

I'd rather do a 2.2 swap, but that's just my opinion.

If your talking about a Hybrid Build and probably about the cheapest way to do it with some really good results...
Used EJ257 SB
Some kind of Forged Pistons
OEM Water Pump
OEM Oil Pump
OEM Timing Belt, guides, and tensioners
OEM Head Bolts
Gasket Kit Which i believe is about 500 for everything you need.
STI Cams 250 used
This is about the cheapest way to get it done, with a protune.

If you use the WRX Cams, I think you have to pull the knock sensor for the avcs and Block of the wholes or something like that..not sure so dont quote me on that part.
Also might half to add some cash for labor if someone elses is building your engine.

I have a hybrid and this is pretty close. I reused my water pump because it only had 12k miles on it. I didnt go with forged pistons either because my goal wasnt to make massive power. Same thing with the STi cams, not necessary, you just dont use the AVCS.

I went with a Cosworth oil pump. It costs me a little extra but it flows much better than the stock pump...insurance I guess.

SB
Water Pump (if necessary)
Oil Pump (if necessary)
STi Head Gasket
OE Head Bolts
Gasket Kit (It was $280 from Mastro 2 yrs ago)
STi Oil Pan and filler tube
Timing belt and tensioners
STi Flywheel (can't use WRX - I went aftermarket, it was cheaper than OE)
Clutch (If I remember right its same as flywheel)
Also, have the heads inspected and cleaned

I believe that's it. I'll have to go thru my receipts one more time to verify. I went above and beyond to improve reliability/performance in some areas i.e. Cosworth oil pump, Power Enterprise kevlar timing belt, Exedy lightweight flywheel and clutch, Perrin crank pulley, FMIC, etc. I spent about $5k including $800 in labor to swap all the parts onto the new block.

Unless you have a blown EJ205, the conversion is not worth it. Youll have better off-boost performance and driveability with the 2.5, but overall performance will be mostly equal.

The EJ22 is hot but Im partial to the 2.14 and 2.35 frankenstein engines people have started to put together.

The 2.5 swap is REALLY common and easy. We do at least one a week here. It's good to replace the ancillary stuff while you're in there, but you basically just buy the block and both gasket kits and go to town. They work REALLY well. We had one recently with a light head port and it easily made 370wft-lbs and 370whp on a 20G and FMIC. We stopped there because it had the stock 5mt tranny
