I started to reply to this (original post) but it was turning into a term paper. I have way too much to say on the topic.

that's why I like racing... you have rules for a class, so the car can't be modified outside those rules. My subaru was going in the direction of the unlimited class which is why I decided to move on to a spec car. Get a car that you CAN'T mod or can barely mod. Forces you to work on your driving instead of constantly spending money on shit. It's the best way to go, trust me. In the last few months I'm sure the subaru would have taken a few thousand more from me, but all the miata has taken is 93 octane.

I'm more into road racing myself, and as I was reading one of my older Super Street Magazines, I came across an article with a white 2005 Subaru STi. As I was reading through it, the owner made some good points. The car was built to race on the road courses, so a lot was done in the chassis and suspension department, but he was only running 390 awhp. That is relatively minimal compared to what some people are running. He said he focused more on the reliability and completing laps then having enormous HP and risking the possibility of parts failure due to extreme stress. I guess I'm in the same boat. I would take reliability. Do some good upgrades, but focus on reliable power. Therefore, with my 05 WRX EJ20, I'm going to try to aim for a 320awhp goal. I know it wont be the fastest EJ20, but will be plenty for me. I have another project to attend to.

Ya I guess after thinking about it quite a bit I really like the idea of "reliable power" for the obvious reason of my car not breaking but I really like my current setup and most of my friends say it feels pretty damn fast when they are in it.... good enough for me, now I need a fancy cd player that has a screen with maps and movies

As far as 320awhp you are going to need a bigger turbo (18g or bigger) and thats going to start to take you out the "reliable" range as far as your tranny goes. But when I upgraded my stock turbo (TD04) and I went to a VF39 (gain of 30ish hp) I was pretty damn pleased... just a thought

I intentionally bought a quality bottom end (ver8 EJ207) and my RA gears before pushing past ~280whp. Been banging on my "pathetic/slow" ride for 30,000 miles now with a shit-eating grin on my face and sheer terror left on the face of passengers.

Making a drag Subaru is like buying a mansion and living in the bathroom of it. To each his own, but I will never understand it.

Then do it right, and whatever you do don't stick your face in the motor

If you're not breaking parts, you're not going fast enough
