this is an open ended question

Typical repair consists of Removal and inspection of your engine, make sure nothing else was damaged, if the heads are in good shape they can be re-used, but I usually recommend freshening them up Valve job and a little port work since relitive to the job cost this is minimal. a Factory EJ20 short block can be had for just under $2000 this and refreshed heads is almost as good as having a new engine. Removal and inspection usually books out at ~5-6 hours, mabye a little more being a turbo car, but it's not a huge job.

you can also go the Junkyard swap route which tends to be the cheapest... however buyer beware I have gotten bad junkyard engines before. and not knowing the history of an engine does not usually fill me with warm and fuzzies.

there are a couple other options like repairing your bottom end. replacing failed components and new bearings, if machine work needs to be done to the crank then oversize bearings. personally I prefer the OEM short block unless you intend on stroking or otherwise increasing the displacement. since once you add all the hours up for machine work parts and reassembly you can get pretty close to the NEW shortblock cost.

So a rough estimate going diffrent routes,
Junkyard engine $1900 est R+R 10-12 hours @$89 = Total $2700-$3000 plus any needed parts or hoses ect.

Add $400 to use a NEW short block, plus a head gasket kit ~100

Cosworth long blocks are around $15,000 + ~1200 in labor.

That's an option too, I just pulled up a quick dealer search for that price. I don't try to make money on parts. since I prefer selling them cheap and knowing where they came from then having them customer supplied. if I get stuff at least I know who to go to if parts are missing or not correct.

if there is a reputable source for STI Short blocks for that cost all the better!

but keep in mind with a 25% displacement increase some tuning will be required. but it's so common amongst the Subaru community I'm sure there is a documented "quick" soloution.

I have been working on WRx's for 3 year's, And a Certified Nissan tech, But money sucked so now im in sale's.

I just got done helping a friend with his 02 wrx with knock. We did his R&R for 1500 complete and up and running. That is 600 for motor and 900 for me.

But On the forums you can pick up a ej20 for a few hundred. Now on nasioc theres one from 400 (Just the short block). 100 for head gaskets and throw your heads on there. and your set. unless you have to pay for labor.

Or go with the STI short block and your heads (Im running a non sti 2.5 with ported and polished heads in my wrx This set-up on other cars have seen above 500 awhp so its a nice and cheap set-up)

$$$$$$ Is determined on what you want.

^^^^ is the way to go if your on a budget. I need to pay shopkeepers and insurance, and cover all work work with a warranty.

I just couldn't trust a $400 engine, heck they are worth $100 in scrap metal. Good luck! One nice thing is subarus are built like tinker toys simple to remove things and somewhat straightforward to work on.. just make sure you get the proper head bolt sequence. since gaskets are a point of failure if done incorrectly. and subaru has the most complicated torquing sequence in the business.
