New EM option at BG
Okay guys and gals, we have decided to currently offer 3 reflash Engine Management (EM) solutions at Batlground Motorsports Engineering (BG). You probably know that I have previously only supported 2 EM options; Cobb Accessport and Ecutek Flash. We are still in discussion with Ecutek, but they are currently requiring us to buy 10 licenses UP FRONT in order to get working software. In the interim we added a third EM option; ecuEdit. Here’s a quick rundown of the pros and cons of each:
1) Cobb Accessport. This is my favorite.
Pros:
1) Real-time tuning (saves you $$$ on tuning)
2) Nice GUI (Graphical User Interface) with proper scaling
3) Sweet little Accessport with a color screen
4) Live data (lets you see CELs and important ECU information)
5) Performance tests (1/4 mile and 0-60)
6) Up to 30 full maps stored on port
7) You can easily drop maps with only a desktop computer
If you can get me data logs, I can e-mail map changes
9) Some of the best customer service in the industry (here in USA)
10) The only reliable Off The Shelf (OTS) maps out there
11) If you want to sell it, it easily “unmarries” from the car
12) The V2 AP’s are holding EXCELLENT resale value
13) For the Drive By Wire (DBW) cars, launch control and flat shifting.
14) We can tune it NOW.
Cons:
1) I don’t know if you can call it a con as I think it’s worth it, but it is the most expensive piece at $695. It’s also the only one that comes with Off-The-Shelf (OTS) maps and a real company with EXCELLENT customer service
2) AP Ver. 1’s are a little finicky between base and realtime maps.
3) GUI is harder to see
2) Ecutek. The original “professionally tunable software.”
Pros:
1) Simple – one map in your ecu.
2) Easy to see GUI. (saves you $$$ on tuning)
3) Real company behind it.
4) Delta Dash (the data logging software) is probably the best in the industry (YOU only get this if you get the Ecutek EZ-ECU).
5) EZ-ECU comes with Delta Dash and the ability for you to drop maps.
6) Licenses are $275 (until we sell 10, then they’re $350)
7) EZ-ECU is $550 with a license (until we sell 10, then they’ll be more)
Cons:
1) No hardware. If you don’t get EZ-ECU, you don’t get “anything.”
2) Without EZ-ECU (and a laptop) you can’t change maps
3) Only Ecutek tuners can tune your car
4) If you have a bugeye, your ECU gets totally locked by Ecutek
5) Main support is in England.
6) Even with EZ-ECU you must have a laptop to do anything.
7) All post ’05 ECU’s are non-exchangeable so your Ecutek license is “stuck” on that ECU and can’t be sold.
GUI doesn’t scale properly
9) *** IMPORTANT ONE *** We are “pre-selling” licenses until we get 10 sold, THEN we’ll be getting Ecutek
3) ecuEdit.The best of the “open-source” software
Pros:
1) No license cost to you.
2) Access to maps that Ecutek doesn’t have (more boost in the low gears)
3) Properly scaling GUI (saves you $$$ on tuning)
4) I can make you multiple maps that you can change between with a laptop and an $80 cable
5) If you can data log for me, I can e-mail map changes
Cons:
1) No hardware.
2) No easy support (They are in Russia)
3) Clear technology theft from Ecutek
4) Requires a laptop and $80 cable to change maps or view any data
5) If you are already Ecutek’d you will need to save your own file because ecuEdit will overwrite your license.
6) No way to overwrite Ecutek’d bugeye ECU’s.
I’m sure everybody remembers that I was not a fan of any of the open-source softwares due to their clear technology theft. I still stand on the ethical dilemmas of that, but Ecutek has a few of their own issues (locking of ECU’s etc) and after they changed the rules on us, requiring us to buy licenses up front, I feel that it all balances out in the end.

20 minutes after I posted this I found out that I will have access to an Ecutek dongle starting immediately, and for the foreseeable future.
I'll bump the other thread and see if we can get a date for me to come down there.

My buggy was EcuTek'd at one point but, now overwritten via open source tools.
