Because they have a similar horizontal layout Porsche motors (H6) are sometimes also called boxer style motors. The same can be said for an old vw bug I would imagine...

they are called boxer motors because they are boxer motors, not because porsche uses them. the pistons "box" each other, meaning they move symmetrically outwards and inwards and come together at the same time.

it is similar to a porsche motor in the layout, but other then that it shares no common similarity.

It basically has the same concept as a porsche engine.

Flat engine - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Every Subaru has a boxer engine. For that matter, so does every new Porsche. And they all use the boxer engine for the same reason - performance.
