Hp difference, (depending on the year) a wrx is a 2.0L and an sti is a 2.5L (in america).

transmission, differentials, brakes, hubs, turbo, intercooler, headlights, interior, exterior, block, heads, exhaust, suspension... plus a few more parts are better or different on an st compared to a wrx.

they only look the same. mechanically they are just way to different.

^^^ Like he said, there is quite a bit to list...

Generally speaking, you can look at it all like this:

The Impreza WRX's* are to Mustang GTs
...as...
The Impreza WRX STi's are to like Mustang Cobras

I think those are pretty fair analogies.

You get a substantial amount of performance out of the WRX's, but the STi's are clearly an overstated upgrade.

*Now, to be more fair, the 02-05 WRXs are more comparable whereas the 06s have: bigger engines [2.0 to a 2.5 Liter], come with better brakes [twin-piston front calipers to four-piston front and two-piston rears] and 17" wheels as opposed to 16" wheels, etc.

it depends on the years.
02-05 wrx's had 2.0l open deck blocks. these are known as ej205's.
06 wrx's have the same block as the sti. which is 2.5l, ej257 and semi closed deck design.
04-06 sti's have 2.5l, ej257, and semi closed deck design.
