Picking up STI tomorrow AM
Well, tomorrow AM I am biting the bullet. I will getting a crystal grey with 2 miles on it and a short shifter for a few hundred less than the best offer I found. I have to take a little road trip to pick it up, but oh well.
I know this has probably been beat to death on this board, but I will ask anyhow... Break In? On my bikes, I have always varied the RPM's and slowly with miles (20) would start zinging the rpms a bit higher under medium load and then let the car decel. I would slowly zing it higher with more miles, but never really full throttle extreme heavy loads. This process seemed to work well on my bike, as it dynos fairly strong and don't have any engine smoke or burning of oil. What do you think? Different process for FI engines vs. NA engines? I hear the manual states to keep it under 4,000 RPMS for the first 1,000 miles... WTF?
always safe to follow subaru's recommendations but... I have broken in quite a few motors in my day and I just follow one rule: if you have to run it only run it for one gear...dont beat on it. Just drive it normal, like you would if you had your grandmother in the car.

MY grandmother got a ticket @ 75 y/o for doing 65 in a 30. And it didn't happen because she wasn't aware/not paying attention to what was going on...
I just broke in a new car...
What I did is for the first 200 or 300 miles, I drove very conservatively. From then to around 500 miles I got into boost a little, about half throttle, but shifted at or around 4,000rpm. 500-700 miles I progressively gave it more and more throttle, but still shifting at or around 4krpm. 700-1000 I progressively gave it more throttle and increased the rpms. Basically you're trying not only to break in your engine but to get it used to higher rpm/boost levels. By 1000 miles she should be good to go
Remember to vary the rpm's for the first 500 miles or so, and don't use the cruise controll for the first 700 or so.
