Snorkus

It is a common misconception that the air intake "horn" is simply a silencer, and while that is ONE function of the intake assembly, it is not the only one. Mainly it is there to provide a constant, predictable, regular flow of cooler air to the engine. Without that intake horn there, the air coming into the filter box can vary widely in temperature and volume. The air flow sensor will attempt to compensate, but with parameters changing much more rapidly than in a stock configuration, it can't always keep up and thus your a/f mix gets wonky. Some WRXs can go a long time without any problems after removing the intake/silencer assembly, but some will send a rod through the top of the block. Why do some make it while others don't? Ambient temp, vehicle speed, driver habits, etc. can all play a role. You most certainly would not want to remove the silencer if you live in Arizona or Las Vegas; in 2 months last summer, I saw 3 WRXs that had blown their engines because the silencer was removed, and 1 STi without the silencer running a fuel trim in the positive low-20's (it was running waaaay lean, should be in the single digits). Back to throwing a CEL, removing the intake silencer will not throw a code in and of itself, but if your car is running lean or rich because it was removed, a CEL could be thrown.

Dude. you are running way rich. you need to lean your car out some. easy way to do it.
INTAKE. get a used one for 50 bucks. shit i sold John mine for that and it is a 175 dollar peice.
the PDXTuning crew has been doinng tons of R&D on this. and it seems to be a very helpfull mod on the STI`s

How does an engine blow from having a removed snorkel? Yeah, it gets dirty quicker, but blowing an engine? Come on now. They must have somehow sucked up mysteriously large, sharp rocks that penetrate the filter.

No problems with my snorkus removed. Ive heard that this can cause problems before, but with the amount of cars its done on I cant see it being any more dangerous than putting something aftermarket on the car.
One could argue there's a difference between replacing the snorkus and removing the snorkus. The former implies replacement with a straighter flowing piece. The latter implies a gap between air box and side-of-fender, which can suck in hot engine-compartment air, and the flapping of the rubber gasket can cause turbulence, possibly around the MAF. Enough to cause running lean? That I can't say.
In terms of that quoted "story", I would argue its all a FUD attempt (Translation for Franklin: spreading Fear, Uncertainty, Doubt about something). Notice he doesn't say what the mod levels of these blown-motor cars were.
