Blown tire ?
Blown tire ?
If a tire blows on the WRX, Do you REALLY need to replace all 4 tires ? I have 3 good tires .....at least 50% tread but I am hesitant to just replace the 1 tire since I have heard that this can bind the AWD tranny. Discuss please!

depends on what type of tires. if they are the stock ones and you are replacing with a stocker. i wouldnt worry. but if it is a aftermarket one. the tread is 1000% better and it grippes the road better so this would present a slight differance. personally i woulnd thick it is a huige deal. but if it gives you peace of mind...

I really dont think that a 30% tread difference would matter, and I don't feel like spending $450 on tires when I can just buy 1 for $100 or so. I just heard from the dealer that if one goes all should be replaced. I have 17: nitto neogens on it right now.

Why would you replace all four? Because of AWD? Bull...sorta.
Assuming same tire type, you can get away with doing one tire if the tires are new. If the tires aren't too worn you can get away with simply changing two tires. If the tires have a lot of wear it'd be safer to change out all four due to differences in circumference of the tires causing bind in the AWD system.
Doing a quick online search, it seems that 0.25" is the threshold value for wear meaning when a new tire is compared to an old, if there is a tread difference greater than 0.25", you'll need to replace all four.

true, I just wanted to see what everyone else has heard and done. I am just going to buy 2 and I should be cool! Now I just need to find a place that has nitto neogens in stock

It becomes a loop hole for SOA. If you have a problem with the LSD it will not be covered under warranty. Because in the STi books it clearly states that if tread is not at least a 1/4 of an inch of each other you can cause damage to the LSD and they recommend that you change all four because of that.
Just letting you know what's in the manuals.
