Fuji Heavy Industries Ltd. (FHI)
Fuji Heavy Industries Ltd. (FHI) traces its beginnings to Nakajima Aircraft Co., Ltd., founded in 1917. In the intervening years, the spirit of innovation at FHI has propelled the company to the top of the Japanese aerospace industry. The company's solid track record in fixed-wing aircraft includes delivery to the Defense Agency of the first domestic jet, the T-3 trainer, as well as the T-3 Mentor and T-5 Mentor trainers. Accumulating technological know-how with every aircraft, FHI's steady efforts were rewarded in 2000, when it was designated as the lead contractor for the new Mentor trainer, a follow-up to the T-3.
As for large passenger planes, FHI has been deeply involved in the manufacture of Boeing aircraft since 1973, including the 767 and most recently the 777. In a first for foreign partners, FHI is responsible for the vital center-wing section connecting the main wings and the fuselage. The company joined with Boeing at the design stage to address joint development and manufacture of this mission-critical part, earning it the "Supplier of the Year" award for the main structure ahead of 3,000 other suppliers around the world.
