Default Poll : Should I switch to synthetic oil?

Wondering if I should switch to synthetic oil after a break 5000mi on the new Suby. Just want to know if you guys think its worth the extra money or should I stick with the factory stuff.

Please post any other info you feel I may need to know!

Thanx, Leroy

hard decision. switching to synthetic won't hurt. I would go with factory recommendations though.

Thanks for the info.. It's interesting what the guy from Caltex said...that synthetic has no benifit over regular oil.

I have problems believing what that guy says since he was talking about mobile 1 being a full synthetic and this was after the change over from when mobile went to a 5% synth 95% dino oil blend which was a BIG deal in the industry (Mobile sued castrol over the use of "synthetic" for their syntec line which is only a synthetic dino mix, so now mobile 1 does the same thing and calls it a synthetic) and that was pretty big news, I would have imagined he would have at least heard about it if he worked in the industry.

now synth vs dino, I say synth because it does resist heat break down better than pure dino will (it is a proven fact, do a google search about it) and it will prolong the life of seals in the engine. just remember once you synth you cant go back to dino.

also their are only 2 pure synth companies left, Amsoil and Royal Purple

I think you'll be fine with conventional lubricants but using synthetics could buy you some additional time between oil changes. Whatever you decide I wouldn't suggest using the 5w30 suggestion on the oil filler cap in Florida (winter or summer). The owners manual has a chart which should help you choose correctly.

I would also suggest collecting a sample of the conventional oil you have now and submit it to http://www.blackstone-labs.com. The will send you a free collection kit and the report will cost you about $20.00. I use this service every 2-3 oil changes to keep an eye on things.

i use mobil one. if the engine can't keep running for the five years i plan on owning the car, then i'm not blaming the oil, it will be the engine's fault.

Myth, not true...synthetics and dino can be interchanged, mixed, etc with no detrimental effects.

Compare the inside of an engine with 50k on it run an dino oil to an identical engine run on synthetic, it'll make a believer out of you.
