Skeet - Put it in with the understanding that rough shifting, short shifter or not, will damage your synchros and/or gears to some degree. Shift it like you want your car to last more than a week and it will. Row the gears like there's no tomorrow and there likely won't be.

YMMV, but all 5 of my syncos were shot and needed to be replaced at 35,000 miles on my 02 WRX. I had a short shifter installed since around 2,000 miles. I loved the feel but I don't think I would do it again. If you want to improve the shifter feel I would suggest the following:

STi motor mount.
STi transmission mount.
Kartboy poly shifter bushing.

If you're still unhappy I would at that point get the Subaru STi short shifter kit. $$

Yes, put it in, there's nothing on it's own that it's going to do to hurt your tranny. I highly recommend the better shift bushing, though. As the short shifter on the stock bushing makes the car a little harder to shift accurately.
