Leonard, why in the hell would you be changing tire pressure in most applications?

In most cases people add pressure for handling apps or lower pressure for drag apps to limit or allow tire distortion. In the case of adding air you are compromising your tire contact patch for the sake of sidewall stiffness. The tweel can give you the best of both worlds.

You appear to be missing the fact that if you get rid of the relationship between pressure and tire deflection you elminate the need to change tire pressure for performance apps.

As far as load bearing apps go, how many truck drivers do you know that change tire pressure depending on their loads?

no future for street tires. they wont stay balanced from crap that collects in the tire. great idea for trackers and the like

Good call Jerrry. Maybe one could use a pressure washer to clear out the wheel, or even a garden hose to rinse it out for regular maintenance.
I would also have to think that these tires would be good for off roading. If your rolling over some rock and the tire can to a certain extext conform to the rock surfaces themselves then you have a better contact patch. Where as with the traditional tire you will only get some much contact while the rock due to the qualities of today pnumatic tires.

Like I said earlier, I think they just had that cross section to show how it works. The sides would be present on production models most likely.
