This is just Toyota's new management trying to bring back a little fire to their line. Don't think it's going to work though. The only reason they are using the boxer motor is so they can get the low sloping lines they want in the front end. The boxer motor allows for that low hood slope. As for teaming up with Subaru, if they already have a viable motor there is no reason to reinvent/retool a factory to produce one. This car is designed to compete directly with cars like the Genesis but I think it is a little to late.

I am not so sure about the "low sloping lines". That is probably what a Toyota exec would say. Look at the s2000, a boxer engine is not required for this. The reason to not use a viable competitor's engine is out of pride. Toyota no longer has pride or respect for their following. They are solely a business based on profit and nothing else, and so dies it's legacy. They have let me down. (but not enough to get rid of my MR2..... yet).
