What I've found in retail is the quickest way to move into management is to transfer stores when a management position is open. Working at K-Mart and Best Buy, neither really move you up other than to full-time status. To get management just about every manager in the store transferred from another store to get the spot. I don't know why but it seems like the trend I've seen over the years. Publix pays their managers more than most retail establishments so moving into management will be a lot harder I'm sure.
I would look at available spots open in different stores if you want to move up.
