There is much to learn and while a point n shoot might not seem like it could be of any use I think if you started with that and learned composition it would help alot.
Since you now have the dslr I would suggest, as any photography will and has told you,
learn the basics. Composition, Aperture, Shutter Speed, ISO, etc. You need to gain an understanding of light and how to use it to your advantage. Next to creativity these things are the heartbeat of photography. You threw down the money on a dslr set up, now you need to put it to use. There is no point in sticking it on Auto mode and having a bulky $500 point n shoot.
