Turbocharged aircraft and industrial motors are actually better than 1:1 but they also are engineered to have a .5-1K RPM sweet spot.

I can see a motor with a 8K RPM range requiring some severe turbo sizing compromizes but a big turbo on a motor with a small RPM rage would be much easier to maintain optimum ratios for.

Since most of what they teach in engineering is industrial or aircraft related it keeps things simple since automobiles are one of the few engine applications where wide RPMs ranges are required.
