Is it blasting oil out of the left side of the cover? Did you put the front cover o-ring on the block before installing it?

What I would do if I were you is to just pull the front cover (and pulley, and pickup, and bolts hiding in the sump and head). Then take a few thousandths off the top and bottom before putting it back on. Maybe 0.010". You will need to liberally RTV the top and bottom after that. The problem is that everything is tight fitting. The oil pump drive collar engages the front cover tightly, there is zero clearance between the head and upper pan, and there are locating pins so you can't cock it around.

By the way, new front covers should have the part number printed on them. 50Fxx for S13, 69Fxx for S14.
It's possible to pull the front cover and do it, without removing the head
