big blocks aren't normally meant for high rshared_pm use unless built as a dedicated high rshared_pm motor. A lot of my friends and my dad (circle track racer) all ran big block chevy's back in the day, I've also had a factory experimental 396 in a 70 chevelle, a 402 built by Zorians that used to be in our stock car before they dropped cubic inch limits that was put in our tow vehicle, and 4 big block vettes (2 427's and 2 454's).
sadly, I'm not the best educated when it comes to this, just from growing up with them. It took foxbody mustangs to drag me out of chevy's!
although I believe the termi block for a domestic probably the best to build from.

You are right about the 427 tri power motors. The L88 was a pretty sweet motor. Solid lifter, TRW 12.5:1 domed pistons and loved to rev. How ever,.. the LS6 was pretty much the same set up just more stroke and made more HP. They had an LS7 crate motor option also,.. though no LS7 ever made it to a production car. What GM was doing was not lying,.. but not telling the whole truth either. The L88 was rated 425hp at 5200 RPM. What they neglected to mention was that the same motor made 500hp at 6500 RPM.
But now that we are talking about ALL motors of all time.

The GT and Shelby GT500 5.4L still stands as my top pick for the reasons I stated in my previous post. I've read a few posts where guys with 03/04 Terminators were claiming 900hp on their stock short blocks. Incredible when you realize that we're talking about a 281ci motor.
But in the Muscle car era,.. the Buick Stage 3 455 in the 1970 GS was the absolute all time king of HP and torque. Pontiac had a tri power 421 in the Bonnevilles that made some outrageous HP numbers as well. I cant remember the numbers for the 421 but I remember the Tri power 421 and the SD 455 were very close. When I had my 70 GTO my 400 was beating many 455 powered cars. They would get me off the line but I would reel them in and take them on the big end. They just couldnt rev like the 400.
LS1 makes great power for what they are. But even the mightly LS1 is limited. They start breaking at the 600hp level. Havoc over on N2S was pushing close to 600hp and well over 600 trq before his motor chewed up the bearings. And that was just a bolt on LS1 with lots of nitrous.
