If your paying someone else to do the work, sure. But If you can do the work yourself you stand to spend less than half the money and make that 300whp, and thats just on a stock head and sleeves. with head work its easy to put it well into the 400 and beyond, and with sleeves well beyond 500 or more. Youll find that when you get into this kind of territory that you are doing the same work to EITHER one of those blocks....and your saving money because sohc parts are cheaper, and you only have to buy one cam
Build the d series isnt a new trend by any means, its just beginning to appear around this area. People have been making 300 plus on 700 dollar builds for years now.
I personally think its great fun to be the underdog. Plus its simple as hell to find parts and a d16 short block cost me 40 bucks vs 200+, and I didnt have to buy mounts, linkages, axles, or a transmission.
Its not an argument that for all out power you dont want dohc, but like the OP said..the d16s are out there whooping up on their bigger brothers for less.
