To do a shortbox, it's pretty easy. It's not any different than when minitrucks do c-notches except here you would be removing 18" of frame. As long as you scab the rails properly, it'll be safe. The wire harness would just have to be coiled and zip tied. And the brake lines would be a direct swap to a 1500 line. Lots of guys have done it for drag racing.
