You are not the first one with this problem. We are an Alpine dealer but do not sell their amps because IMHO, they are a little too sensitive. We have sent more than one back for repairs similar to these.
You are on the right track for diagnosis though. Or, if you want to be sure, swing by Luke's place and he will get you going in the right direction...
VERY sensitive indeed... The amp itself definitely has a malfunction. Luckily Alpine only charges a flat rate $70 to fix the amps. The subs however seem to have a malfunction aswell. Hooked it up to a 4chan500w Eclipse amp, and sure enough when you turned the volume up, the subs cut out. I'm pretty sure the voice coils are on the way to being totally fried. Luke you have a PM.
