Default Alpine MRD-M1000 Excessive Current

Keep receiving this error message on my amp.. Was working fine for about a day, then the subs cut out and the error message E-3 displayed on the amp, which states "excessive current, eliminate excessive current, power off, then back on." I've looked over everything, including ground, fuse, power wire (4awg), re-wired the subs parellel (they weren't wired parallel originally), even ran it through a capacitor which held 13.99v, still no activity from the subs. The amp has a digital display which monitors Volts, Amps, Temp., and one other thing I can't remember. It's reading perfect voltage, but no longer reads amps (was reading perfect amps before, even with the E-3 code). Anyone have any ideas? I've spent hours searching google and found nothing. LMK any information.

Thanks,

-Jared

What impedence are you running at? Just re-wiring them into parallel is going to drop the load down to a possibly unsafe load, so that's the last thing i would do.

It threw the error before I rewired them. The subs are 13W1V2's.

Yeah, i noticed that but just randomly dropping the load on the amp will only make things worse, never will it make things better. What impedence are the subs? As far as i've ever seen they only come in 4 or 8 ohm, single coil so either way you should be ok, just i'm just asking to verify.

They're 4ohm, so yea, even parellel they're fine. They were working perfectly for about a day. It threw the error, had problems since. Last night the amp was no longer reading amperage. I'm thinking it's a malfunction in the amp itself?

Very well could be. Remove the speaker leads from the amp, remove power and ground for a while to allow everything to stabilize, then reconnect the power without the speaker leads. If it still shows a problem, i'd say it may be busted!

Going to put the subs to a different amp when I get off of work, if they hit, def. the amp. If not, could it be the voice coils on the subs themselves causing the amp to think it's over powering? Like if the connections on the voice coils were loose/damaged? Your shop location in your sig is actually right down the road from my work. You in the same complex as Brydebell Electric was?

You are not the first one with this problem. We are an Alpine dealer but do not sell their amps because IMHO, they are a little too sensitive. We have sent more than one back for repairs similar to these.

You are on the right track for diagnosis though. Or, if you want to be sure, swing by Luke's place and he will get you going in the right direction...

VERY sensitive indeed... The amp itself definitely has a malfunction. Luckily Alpine only charges a flat rate $70 to fix the amps. The subs however seem to have a malfunction aswell. Hooked it up to a 4chan500w Eclipse amp, and sure enough when you turned the volume up, the subs cut out. I'm pretty sure the voice coils are on the way to being totally fried. Luke you have a PM.
